Google took the wraps off Google Pixel 6a at the Google I/O 2022 keynote. The company has confirmed that the Pixel 6a will launch in India, but the launch date and price are still under wraps. The handset retails at USD 499 (Approx. Rs 35,000) in the US, and we can expect it to come around the Rs 40,000 price mark in India. Word on the street is that the Google Pixel 6a will debut in India by the end of July.

Now, the Google Pixel 5a, which didn’t launch in India, is available for Rs 31,350 on Amazon India, at the time of writing, alongside the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which also didn’t launch in India. Should you buy it or wait for the Pixel 6a? Let’s find out.

Google Pixel 5a vs Pixel 6a

At the outset, it is important to mention that the Pixel 5a models being sold on Amazon India are actually imported models. Secondly, there is a one-year seller and not manufacturer warranty on the units up for sale in India. It is unclear whether Google will offer any post-sales service on these devices.

The Google Pixel 5a comes with a 6.34-inch Full-HD+ OLED panel that supports HDR. It draws power from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It packs a 4,680mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. The Pixel 5a has a 12MP primary and 16MP ultra-wide dual rear camera and an 8MP selfie camera.

The Pixel 6a, on the other hand, has a 6.1-inch Full-HD+ OLED panel that supports HDR. Under the hood, it houses a Tensor chipset paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Powering the device is a 4,410 mAh battery that supports fast charging. The Pixel 6a has a dual pixel PDAF 12.2MP primary that supports OIS paired with a 12MP ultra-wide dual rear camera and an 8MP selfie snapper.

The Pixel 6a does not bring many upgrades over the Pixel 5a on-paper specifications. It does come with Google’s own Tensor SoC compared to Snapdragon 765G chipset, which is slightly outdated. Additionally, the Pixel 6a offers features like Magic Eraser and Real Tone for the camera and Titan M2 security chip.

The Google Pixel 5a was launched with Android 11 OS and will receive three years of OS and security updates. The Pixel 6a, on the other hand, boots Android 12 out of the box, and Google has promised three generations of Android updates and five years of security updates.

The Google Pixel 6a will set you back a couple of extra bucks than the Pixel 5a, but it will offer better performance than its predecessor. If you don’t want to wait for the Pixel 6a, then you can save a few bucks and go for the Pixel 5a.
