Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagships were unveiled officially at the Pixel event on Tuesday. These are the first Google phones to come with the in-house Tensor chipset, a 50MP primary camera, Android 12 OS, and up to 120Hz refresh rate. They feature a brand new design, with a horizontal camera bar at the back, punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera, and an in-display fingerprint sensor for security. At launch, Google mentioned the phones will be available in select markets such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, and Taiwan. The company did not mention anything about the Pixel 6 series India launch. Until now.
A Google spokesperson told Gadgets 360 the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will not be coming to India because of multiple factors. “Due to a variety of factors including global demand-supply issues, we are not able to make our products available in all markets. We remain committed to our current Pixel phones and look forward to bringing future Pixel devices to more countries in the future,” said the spokesperson in an emailed response.
This doesn’t come as a surprise considering Google has kept away from launching any of its recent flagships in the country, including the Pixel 4 series, Pixel 5, and Pixel 4a 5G. Google only released the Pixel 4a 4G version in India in recent times.
There are general opinions among experts who believe that Google doesn’t consider the Indian market as a priority when it comes to flagship Pixel phones. “The India market is structured very differently than any other market of its size, with over 90 percent of the (smartphone) market being below Rs. 20,000 ($300). The Pixel lineup has been priced much above this with minimal marketing intervention in a market where China-based brands are known for high-decibel marketing and distribution campaigns,” said Navkendar Singh, Research Director at market intelligence firm IDC India.
The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro come with a starting price of $599 (approx Rs 44,800), which makes it a premium device, especially for the Indian market. “Pixel 6 series is again not being brought in India by Google due to its premium pricing and acknowledgement that it is tough to sell a premium phone in India and also compete with Apple and Samsung in the premium end of the market,” said Singh.
