“The Google Pixel and Pixel XL now support HD calls on the Reliance Jio network”
In our review of the Google Pixel XL, our main gripe with the smartphone was the lack of VoLTE (voice over LTE) support. However, Google has now released the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Pixel, Pixel XL, and other compatible devices, which brings VoLTE support. Apart from the other telecom operators across the globe, the Pixel and Pixel XL finally work with Reliance Jio in India, which is a VoLTE-exclusive network.
The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update comes with the build number NMF260 and weighs 261.9MB. To activate HD calling via VoLTE, you need to enable “Enhanced 4G LTE Mode” by going to your Pixel’s mobile network settings. This mode utilises LTE services to improve voice and other communications. After enabling this mode, you will find “HD” in the status bar, which implies that the phone is now VoLTE-enabled.
Apart from VoLTE support, the latest firmware update for the Google Pixel smartphones brings several bug fixes and improvements, new emoji, and a new GIF sending option from the keyboard. The update is bring rolled out over-the-air, so hit the update option in your Pixel’s settings to check if it’s available.
