Alphabet Inc. to ramp up Pixel smartphone production in India
- A report by The Economic Times, citing two executives from Alphabet Inc., said that the company conducted a round of talks with contract manufacturers Foxconn and Dixon to move a part of its Pixel smartphone manufacturing business to India.
- The company has also asked its partners to source various components needed for manufacturing the device, such as fingerprint sensors, chargers and batteries, locally instead of importing them.
- Google, as per the report, manufactures around 45,000 Pixel smartphones in India every month. However, most of these devices are sold within the country.
- But now, the company is reportedly planning to ramp up the production in the country so that it can supply Made-in-India Pixel smartphones to the US.
- Furthermore, the report mentions that Google was already planning to shift Pixel smartphone production to India. However, now the company has expedited its plans.
- Notably, Google’s plans of moving a part of Pixel smartphone’s production from Vietnam to India come as the company is trying to cushion the impact of the tariffs imposed by the US government.
- For the unversed, the US government has imposed up to 145 percent tariff on imports from China. This number stands at 46 percent for imports from Vietnam. Contrary to that, the country has imposed just 26 percent tariff on imports from India.
- However, the US government has put a 90-day pause on the tariffs imposed on most countries except for China.
- It is worth mentioning that Google started manufacturing its Pixel smartphones in India in August 2024 starting with Pixel 8 (review).
