“The 7X comes with a futuristic 18:9 display as compared to the usual 16:9 screen found on the G5s Plus”

Right from the time the Honor 4X was launched in India, Honor has tasted quite a bit of success in the budget smartphone market. While a part of it owes to the hardware the company was offering at such low prices, the main reason behind it was that the brand has always brought new features in the hands of the budget users. The Honor 5X brought with it a fingerprint scanner, the 6X came with dual rear cameras, and the latest addition – the Honor 7X, brings the modern 18:9 display to the masses.

That’s not to say that its offerings didn’t face any competition. In fact, the fierce competition is what describes the segment around Rs 15,000 the best. And as such, a lot of people are left wondering which smartphone to buy. One of the main competitors to the Honor 7X comes in the form of the Moto G5s Plus. Before you ask us, yes, this is the upgraded version of the Moto G5 Plus and not the latter itself. If only Lenovo could have opted for a better naming scheme. Nonetheless, if you’re one of those people who is having trouble making up their mind between these two smartphones, we’re here to make things a tad bit easier. Here’s a complete rundown of all the similarities and differences between the Honor 7X and the Moto G5s Plus. Let’s get started.

Design and display: miles apart

Let’s be honest. If a more modern, premium looking design is what you’re after, the Honor 7X gets a straight win over the Moto G5s Plus. Yes, the height, width and the weight of the two smartphones are almost identical, but when you picture in (pun intended) the display, things start to become a little one-sided. The 7X boasts a taller 5.93-inch full HD+ display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. In contrast, the G5s Plus sports a regular 16:9 display measuring 5.5-inches diagonally and coming with a full HD resolution. That’s about a 10 percent increase in screen size, without affecting the overall dimensions of the smartphone.

The larger screen helps you during gaming, while multitasking, or even just offer more content while you’re browsing. And even without all these features, the fact remains that smaller bezels look more premium and pleasing to the eye. That said, if you can somehow put this difference away, both smartphones are built quite well thanks to their metallic unibody construction. Another nifty little difference is that the fingerprint scanner on the Honor 7X sits at the back of the device, whereas it’s at the front of the Motorola’s offering.

Performance: as good as it gets

The Moto G5s Plus draws power from a Snapdragon 625 processor, coupled with an Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM. This is a tried-and-tested combination and should be able to handle your everyday tasks, along with a few casual games. On the other hand, the Honor 7X makes use of the company’s own HiSilicon Kirin 659 octa-core processor, which has proved to be on par with its Snapdragon counterpart. Furthermore, Honor’s offering also comes with 4GB of RAM and a Mali-T830 MP2 GPU. In terms of storage, the Moto G5s Plus comes with 64GB of internal storage, whereas the Honor 7X comes in 32GB and 64GB storage variants. Both smartphones also support memory expansion through the use of a microSD card.

In terms of software, the Moto G5s Plus runs on stock Android 7.1 Nougat, albeit with a few additions by Lenovo. Meanwhile, the Honor 7X runs on EMUI built on top of Android Nougat. The UI comes a ton of useful features. Both smartphones are expected to receive the Android Oreo update, but as to when that might happen is still a mystery.

Camera and battery: too close, yet too far

The one thing both smartphones have going for them is a dual-camera setup at the rear. For the Honor 7X, this setup consists of a 16MP primary snapper, coupled with a 2MP depth sensor. The secondary sensor captures depth information allowing you to tinker with your pictures, especially with the portrait mode. In contrast, the Moto G5s makes use of dual 13MP snappers at the back, one of which is an RGB sensor and the other a monochrome one. While both devices are quite capable in the camera department, although Honor’s offering takes a lead with better bokehs and versatile modes. Talking about selfies, both smartphones come with an 8MP selfie camera.

In terms of battery capacity, the Honor 7X features a Li-ion 3,340mAh battery, while the Moto G5s comes with a 3,000mAh Li-ion battery. Despite sporting similar dimensions and a smaller screen, the G5s actually houses a smaller battery in comparison. That said, the Motorola’s smartphone does come with fast charging, which isn’t available on the 7X.

Pricing and availability

The Moto G5s Plus was originally priced at Rs 15,999 on Amazon, but it seems the company is currently offering a discount of Rs 2,000 on the smartphone, bringing down the effective price of the smartphone to Rs 13,999, though it’s known how long will the deal last. On the other hand, the Honor 7X can be purchased from Amazon for a sum of Rs 12,999 for the 32GB variant and Rs 15,999 for the 64GB variant.

Closing thoughts

Honor 7X vs Moto G5s Plus

The Honor 7X seems to be a clear winner in this comparison. Not only is it a more premium-looking device, it also matches the Moto G5s Plus in terms of the power and even goes ahead when we talk about the camera performance. Perhaps the only thing the G5s Plus has going for it is its near-stock user experience. But even then, the pros of the Honor 7X outweigh most other factors. Do you agree?
