“The 9 Lite brings the power of four cameras at a pocket-friendly price”

New features may come and go, but the camera performance of a smartphone is one of its prime aspects, and the one that can make or break it. And as such, phone manufacturers have fought hard to innovate and come up with new camera technologies, be it beauty modes or dual cameras. Honor is one brand that has lead from the front in this department. Its latest entrant, the Honor 9 Lite is no different, as it brings top-of-the-line camera features at a pocket-friendly price. Read on, and you can be a judge for yourself.

Before we begin, let’s get the specifications of the device out of the way. The Honor 9 Lite flaunts a 5.65-inch 18:9 display with a full HD+ resolution. Under the hood, it is powered by an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC, coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM, as well as a 3,000mAh battery. In terms of software, the phone boots Android Oreo with the brand’s EMUI skin on top.

Now talking about the camera specs, we find that the 9 Lite is one of the few smartphones to flaunt a quad-camera setup… with two cameras each at the front and back of the device. At the rear, there is a 13MP primary sensor, supported by a 2MP depth sensor, and features like a LED flash and phase detection autofocus. Interestingly, even the front bears a 13MP selfie camera with a 2MP depth sensor as well. This means that you shouldn’t be sacrificing quality when you shift between cameras.

Firing up the camera app, you are greeted with a minimalistic UI which is not only easy to use, but is also stuffed with features to the brim. These include advanced modes like Pro photo, Night shot, Light Painting, Time-lapse and Slow-mo, among others. Moreover, the 2MP depth sensor helps take better portrait shots by maintaining an enhanced depth of field effect. Then there are the options of live filters, effects and watermarks, and it is easy to see how the camera is the top priority in the Honor 9 Lite.

While we’d love to continue about how the camera fares in the real world, it only makes sense if you can judge the performance for yourself. Here are a few camera samples captured from the Honor 9 Lite.

For the most part, the shots clicked by either of the two dual camera setups capture decent details with good colour reproduction. The bokeh effect also adds a charm to the images while ensuring that the subject stands out from the rest of the background. There is a slight dip in low light, but that is an Achilles heel for every smartphone camera. On the bright side however, the phone is a delight for selfie lovers, with the built-in beauty mode doing an excellent job at correcting skin tones.

That was a quick look at the camera capabilities of the new quad-camera toting smartphone from Honor, the Honor 9 Lite. For a price starting at Rs 10,999 for the 3GB / 32GB variant, that is a lot of camera tech stuffed in one smartphone.
