Huawei launches world’s first-ever tri-folding phone, the Huawei Mate XT: check out the price

Huawei has finally unveiled its latest foldable, the Mate XT but this isn’t your regular flip or book-style foldable, instead, it is a tri-folding phone. This makes it a one-of-a-kind design in the world and comes after Tecno unveiled a similar-looking Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-fold concept phone, which is not up for retail sale. The Huawei Mate XT has two hinges to accommodate two folding displays yet weighs just 298 grams.

  • The Huawei Mate XT is priced at RMB 19,999 (approx Rs 2,36,200) for the 16GB+256GB model, RMB 21,999 (around Rs 2,59,800) for the 16GB+512GB version and RMB 23,999 (approx 2,83,400) for the 16GB+1TB version.
  • The phone is available in Black and Red colours.
  • The company is bundling Freebuds 5 earbuds, a USB Type-C cable, and a charging adapter in the box package.
  • Interested customers can order the phone and it will be on sale in China from September 20th.

Huawei Mate XT specifications, features

The Huawei Mate XT sports a 6.4-inch single screen when folded, a 7.9-inch 2K dual display and a large 10.2-inch tablet screen with a 3K resolution. The foldable is just 3.6mm when fully unfolded, which is extremely slim. The company hasn’t revealed the chipset details but it could be a Kirin SoC. The foldable phone runs on Harmony OS 4.2 out of the box.

In terms of cameras, the Huawei Mate XT features a 50MP primary camera with OIS, f/1.4-f/4.0 variable aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 12MP periscope telephoto sensor with 5.5x zoom and OIS. We get an 8MP shooter on the front for selfies and video chats.

The phone packs a 5,600mAh battery with 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Connectivity options include 5G SA/NSA, dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2 LE, GPS, NavIC, NFC, and USB 3.1 Type-C. 

The Huawei Mate XT’s screen is made of multi-directional bending flexible materials. Compared to regular foldables, the bending resistance has increased by 25 percent. It features a composite ultra-tough laminated structure and a composite ultra-tough laminated structure. It uses non-Newtonian fluid and the largest UTG glass.

Taking advantage of the large form factor, Huawei introduced a foldable touch keyboard that can be paired with the Mate XT, which will offer a desktop-PC-like experience.

Huawei Mate XT vs Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2

For context, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 has a 6.48-inch folded display and this opens into a large 10-inch 4:3 screen. The screen on the phone comes with TDDI technology support, which is used on foldable phones for the first time. When completely folded, the Ultimate 2 has a thickness of just 11mm compared to the 12.8mm of the Huawei Mate XT.

While other specs of the Phantom Ultimate 2 are not revealed, the company claims the hinge comes with 2100MPa strength and can last over 300,000 folds. Unlike the Tecno tri-folding phone, the Huawei Mate XT will be commercially available for purchase in China later this month.
