Winner: iQOO 9T
Nothing Phone (1)
The Nothing Phone (1) was the dark horse of this year’s smartphone launch cycle. Founded by ex-OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, Nothing is a brand that aims to cut the clutter and bring about a fresh approach to the market. The Phone (1), sort of, managed to create hype with a premium build quality, a unique design with glyph lights at the back, and a clean Android interface. The smartphone comes with a 6.55-inch 120Hz OLED display, a Snapdragon 778G Plus processor, up to 12GB of RAM, and a dual 50MP rear camera setup. In terms of bells and whistles, it has got it all, including wireless charging.
The flagship OnePlus 10T 5G has also made it to our list of best phones in 2022, under Rs 50,000. One of the only few smartphones in the market sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, this phone is a beast. You get a massive 6.7-inch 120Hz display panel, up to 16GB of RAM, and a 4800mAh removable battery with 150W fast charging! Phew, the list goes on and on. Apart from these features, there is a 50MP triple camera setup at the back and a 16MP sensor up front.
If you thought a 6.7-inch display was massive, we present to you the iQOO 9T that offers a huge 6.78-inch full-HD+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Made for gaming and intensive processing, this phone offers a big Vapor Chamber Liquid Cooling System, paired with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. On top of that, you get 120W Flashcharge that gives you 50% battery juice within 8 minutes of charge. The differentiator in this category is the 50MP GNS rear primary sensor, which brings along a 13MP Ultra Wide angle sensor and a 12MP portrait sensor with 20X zoom.
A lot of smartphone fans were delighted in 2022, as trusted brand Motorola unveiled the Edge 30 Fusion, which packs a punch when it comes to features and value for money in its segment. With a gorgeous, curved-display design, the smartphone offers some of the classiest colour variants on the market, including the Viva Magenta with a vegan leather finish. As for specifications, you get a Snapdragon 888+ processor with 5G support, 8GB LPDDR5 RAM, and a 50MP quad function camera stuck to the rear of the smartphone. The best part about the Edge 30 Fusion is its 144Hz pOLED display that makes playing games and streaming videos a feast for your eyes.
If displays are really your thing, look no further than the Realme GT 2 Pro. With a top-of-the-line 2K “Super Reality” display, this is indeed the most premium smartphone sold by the BBK Electronics offshoot. And, premium it indeed is. You get a unique ISCC-certified paper-like biopolymer rear panel, a Steel Black colour option with AG glass chemical etching, and the new Stainless Steel Vapor Cooling System Max. Coming back to the display, which is the phone’s talking point, the 2K panel has a peak brightness of a whopping 1400nits and comes with the protection of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Premium yet relatively affordable, the GT 2 Pro is a solid contender for us.
Continuing Realme’s successful run in the premium smartphone segment is the GT NEO 3. With a unique design inspired by “racing legends”, the GT NEO 3 is indeed a racing champ with up to 150W charging support out of the box. One of the most affordable options on the list, the smartphone isn’t devoid of premium specifications. You get a 6.7-inch 120Hz display, 12GB of RAM, a 50MP triple rear camera, and Bluetooth 5.3 support. There is a dedicated display processor that supports advanced gaming on the smartphone by improving virtual frame rate.
Made for the photographer in you, the Reno8 Pro 5G sports a 50MP triple rear camera setup and a 32MP selfie camera. The highlight of the camera is its 960fps AI-based slow motion video capture and cinematic-grade Hyperlapse. The smartphone sports a premium design as the rear camera setup smoothly blends in with the glass panel at the back. This unibody design comes in two gorgeous colour variants – Glazed Green and Glazed Black. The 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED panel, with its 93.4% screen-to-body ratio, is indeed the cherry on top.
If design is what excites you, the Vivo V25 Pro offers something most phone manufacturers don’t – a rear back panel that changes colour. Yes, the smartphone comes with something called a colour-changing Fluorite AG Glass design that offers a palette ranging from a “clear sky” to the “deep sea”. Another aspect that stands out for the V25 Pro is its 3D curved display that is just a delight to use every time you pick up the phone. Apart from that, up to 12GB of RAM, a 64MP triple rear camera setup, and a 4830mAh removable battery with fast charging are what keep fans interested in this Vivo V series smartphone.
The S21 FE 5G ticks all the right boxes to make it a solid contender for a “value for money” flagship smartphone. You get premium build quality with good-looking colour options, a 6.4-inch 120Hz AMOLED 2X panel with Gorilla Glass Victus, 32MP selfie camera, and a whole lot more. What takes the cake though is IP68-level waterproofing and support for wireless charging, which are great features to have in this segment.
As they are popularly known as, these affordable flagships do offer the best in cameras, display, internals, and build quality at relatively affordable price points. Our jury members will be evaluating them and casting their votes soon. Please check in a few days later to see who won.
