The Indian Gadget Awards is the most prestigious event in the tech industry, with as many as 30 experts from the Indian tech media community coming together to choose the winners. More than 100 nominees are part of the 22 award categories in this event, and this particular awards category focuses on the Best Affordable Flagship Phone of 2020. This particular segment attracted all the major smartphone brands this year, with the usual contenders going head to head with other brands also eying this space.
The phones we saw in 2020 in this category came replete with high-end specs and features, without the high price tags. We’re considering devices that are being sold for around or below Rs 50,000. Without any further ado then, let’s take a look at the nominees for Best Affordable Flagship Phone of 2020.
The OnePlus 8T undercuts the OnePlus 8 Pro by a good Rs 12,000, yet retains most of its headlining features. These include the 120Hz Fluid AMOLED display for ultra-smooth scrolling and the Snapdragon 865 chipset for all the power you will need at your fingertips. And in the fast charging department, it actually beats the Pro model with its 65W charging support as opposed to its older sibling’s 30W charging. The quad-camera setup, and dual stereo speakers, and 5G support add further value to this powerhouse of a smartphone.
Mi 10 is the first Mi-branded flagship smartphone to hit the Indian market in a while. So naturally, there was a lot of excitement surrounding it, and the phone really managed to impress everyone. At just Rs 49,999, it offered the benefits of the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset that also gave it 5G capabilities. Its quad-camera setup was headlined by a 108MP wide camera that came with a seven-piece lens as well as OIS. The Mi 10’s 6.67-inch Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate was also something that gave it a lot of its appeal, apart from its 4,780mAh battery with 30W fast charging support.
The Realme X50 Pro holds the distinction of being the first 5G phone to be launched in India. And its highly-competitive price gave most competitors a good run for their money. The phone uses the Snapdragon 865 chipset, displays its visuals on a 6.44-inch 90Hz Super AMOLED screen, and charges its 4,200mAh battery at a whopping 65W speed that takes it from 0 to 100 percent in just 35 minutes. To top it all off, the Realme X50 Pro also offers the benefits of a 64MP + 12MP + 8MP + 2MP quad-camera setup on the back and a 32MP + 8MP assembly in the front for a versatile photography experience.
The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE or Fan Edition was a special phone, offering the Samsung flagship experience at a lower-than-super-premium price tag. Available in a range of funky colours, the phone utilises the same Exynos 990 chip that goes in the other, more expensive Galaxy S20 flagship phones. Moreover, the S20 FE sports a 120Hz AMOLED display just like those handsets. Another trait that makes it a winner is its IP68 dust- and water-resistance. While its wide and ultra-wide cameras are the same as those on the main flagship line, its third camera is a telephoto unit that offers 3x optical zoom.
The second-gen iPhone SE was announced this April and quickly captured the fancy of Apple fans. The device takes its design cues from the iPhone 8 but its adoption of the A13 Bionic chip makes sure that it’s more than ready for the future. The fact that it carries just one rear camera doesn’t look great on paper, but the images and videos captured by this shooter are great, to say the least. It’s an apt device for those who prefer smaller phones, as its screen is just 4.7-inch in size. Also, the iPhone SE 2020 is the only new iPhone with a physical Touch ID sensor, if that’s something you value.
Launched with the aim of making the flagship Mi series more affordable, the Mi 10T Pro is a worthy nominee in this category. It ships with the same Snapdragon 865 chipset and the same 108MP main camera as the flagship Mi 10 but cuts down the number of rear cameras to just three shooters (down from four). Its LCD screen sports a whopping 144Hz refresh rate that is more than what any other phone on this list can offer. The battery onboard this handset is a 5,000mAh unit that offers 33W fast charging support, making it a device that not only lasts long but also charges quickly. A strong contender for the title for sure.
