Intel Core Ultra 200V series (Lunar Lake) processors launched with focus on AI performance and power efficiency

On Tuesday, Intel announced the Core Ultra 200V series processors in Berlin ahead of IFA 2024. These new x86 processors, codenamed Lunar Lake, succeed the first-gen Meteor Lake chips announced late last year. The Intel Core Ultra 200V ‘Lunar Lake’ processors significantly improve graphics performance, application compatibility, security, and AI computing over its predecessor. Intel Core Ultra 200V-powered laptops from Acer, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, MSI, HP, Lenovo, and LG will be available globally starting September 24th.

The new Intel Core Ultra 200V series promises up to 30 percent faster gaming and 50 percent lower power consumption than the previous generation processor. The 2x Crestmont architecture of the Meteor Lake processor has been upgraded to a 4x Skymont E-core cluster for improved performance and power efficiency.

Intel’s new Lunar Lake processors deliver up to 120 total platform TOPS (tera operations per second) across CPU, GPU, and NPU. The company claims that the 4th generation NPU is 4x more powerful than the previous generation and is ideal for sustained AI workloads while remaining energy-efficient.

The built-in Intel Arc GPU includes eight new 2nd Gen X-cores, eight enhanced ray tracing units, support for up to three 4k monitors, and a new built-in Intel X Matrix Extensions AI engines with up to 67 TOPS to power creative applications and boost gaming performance.

AI is very much at the core of Intel Core Ultra and PCs powered by the new Lunar Lake processors will be able to take full advantage of what AI can offer across aspects like content creation, security, productivity, and gaming.

When it comes to battery life, here’s a quick look at what the Intel Core Ultra 200V series can deliver compared to its competitors:

While the above data (based on UL Procyon’s Office Productivity benchmark test) is between the Core Ultra 7 processor and Qualcomm’s X Elite X1E-80-100, the one below shows Intel’s Core Ultra 9 offering better battery life compared to the X1E-78-100 and AMD HX370 processors from the same OEM with 1080p display and 14-16-inch chassis.

What’s more impressive is that the 8-core 8 threads Lunar Lake processors deliver up to 3x improved performance compared to the previous generation Meteor Lake 12-core 14 threads. Here’s a quick look at what the Intel Core Ultra 200V Series offers:
