“The iPad Pro will be the first iOS-based product line ever to differentiate on RAM on the basis of storage capacity”
Apple traditionally does not reveal the amount of RAM it packs with its iPads and iPhones, something that held true as the brand unveiled the new iPad Pro models on October 30th. But it seems the company is shipping the new iPad Pro models with varying RAM capacities, depending on the storage options buyers choose. Apparently only the top-end variant of the tablets comes with 6GB of RAM — the highest yet reported on an Apple device — while the other storage options have to contend with 4GB system memory.
According to a series of tweets by software developer Steve Troughton-Smith, the 1TB variants of the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models come with 6GB of RAM onboard. The remaining three storage options — 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB — ship with 4GB of memory, the same as the previous-generation models. The source for the claim that 1TB variant has 6GB of RAM apparently lies in Xcode. The developer says in his tweet: “technically the kCoreThemeMemoryClass enum doesn’t map 1:1 but CoreUI only knows about 6GB devices so the iPad must be 6GB if not any prior value.”
There is actually some benchmarking evidence to support this claim too. Geekbench listings of two new iPad variants have cropped up online, showing one variant (iPad 8,3) with 4GB of RAM and another (iPad 8,8) with 6GB RAM. There is not much other information to glean from these listings apart from the iOS 12.1 software version though.
This marks the first time Apple is shipping two memory options for the same product. However, for a confirmation regarding the same, we would have to wait for a teardown test by the likes of iFixit and others.
As mentioned above, iPad Pro comes in 11-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes and four storage options. The tablets are powered by the all-new A12X processor, come with AR support, Face ID, iOS 12, 12MP rear camera, and 7MP front camera. Prices for the new iPad Pro models start at Rs 71,900 for the base 11-inch 64GB Wi-Fi model and go up to Rs 1,71,900 for the top-end 12.9-inch 1TB variant with cellular connectivity.
