“The new report on the iPhone 12 states that this year’s iPhone may not get the coveted redesign after all”
Apple has so far been a regular feature at the rumour mill, with news about the iPhone 12 showing up regularly off late. So far, the iPhone 12 series is tipped to come with 5G support, improved Face ID and 3D ToF camera, and up to 6GB of RAM. Past reports have also suggested that Apple will be designing the iPhone 12 based on the iPhone 4 design. But a new report by Macotakara, a fairly reliable place for Apple rumours, contradicts those rumours and claims the iPhone 12 will not actually feature iPhone 4-like flat frame design. The report specifically talks about the overall size and slimness of the upcoming iPhones.
The new report states that in terms of size, the 5.4-inch iPhone, expected to launch as the iPhone 12, may fall somewhere between the sizes of the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8, which featured 4-inch and 4.7-inch screens respectively. The 6.1-inch iPhones of 2020, rumoured to be iPhone 12 Plus and iPhone 12 Pro, will reportedly be sized between the overall sizes of the present iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max. This seems peculiar, since the iPhone 11 already has a 6.1-inch display, and increasing a device’s size despite retaining the same display size seems counterproductive. However, this might also mean that Apple may lend a different display aspect ratio to this year’s 6.1-inch iPhones, which makes things rather interesting since we haven’t heard anything about the display aspect ratio of the upcoming iPhones yet.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is expected to succeed the iPhone 11 Pro Max, is said to be slightly taller than the latter. This is expected, since the iPhone 12 Pro Max is also expected to feature a slightly larger, 6.7-inch display than the 6.5-inch one found on its 2019 counterpart. In terms of thickness, the report states that the 6.7-inch iPhone may be as much as 9 percent slimmer than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The latter measured 8.1mm in thickness, and despite retaining a large camera area on the phone, Macotakara believes that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will measure just 7.4mm in thickness. The report further claims that the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a “bigger sensor” than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and it will be mighty interesting to see how Apple manages to fit in a larger image sensor and reduce the size of the iPhones in terms of thickness.
However, Macotakara and Kuo’s earlier reports do agree on the camera setup of the iPhones. As a result, Apple’s upcoming 5.4-inch iPhone and the lower spec 6.1-inch iPhone are expected to feature a dual rear camera setups, while the higher spec 6.1-inch iPhone and the 6.7-inch iPhone are expected to feature triple rear camera setups along with a 3D time of flight (ToF) sensor.
