iPhone 9/ SE 2 renders reveal iPhone 8-like design and single-rear camera setup

The CAD-based renders of iPhone 9 (which was till recently in the rumour mill as iPhone SE 2) have been leaked ahead of its rumoured March 2020 launch. In line with previous leaks and rumours, the handset indeed shares its design cues with the iPhone 8 smartphone from 2017. The newly leaked iPhone 9 renders (courtesy @OnLeaks) reveal an archaic design, with no swanky 19:9 aspect ratio screen or multiple camera sensors. The images show the handset will sport a display with 16:9 aspect ratio, with hefty bezels on the front and a single camera at the back.

Just like the iPhone 8, the iPhone 9 will have the Touch ID fingerprint sensor at its disposal to take care of biometric security — it doesn’t look like the handset will support Apple’s Face ID tech. To recall, rumours are rife that Face ID is going to be replaced by in-display fingerprint sensing tech later this year with iPhone 12, so the physical Touch ID and no Face ID will make the iPhone 9 seem particularly archaic in biometrics.

Moving on towards the edges, the right spine of the handset is home to the power button, while the left spine has a volume rocker and alert slider. The Lightning port, meanwhile, is sandwiched in between the speaker grill on the bottom edge of the iPhone 9. To differentiate it with the iPhone 8, the upcoming Apple offering is believed to sport frosted glass design at the back, similar to the iPhone 11 Pro.

The report further added that the handset will ship with a 4.7-inch screen. Rumours are rife that it’ll be Apple’s Liquid Retina display with HD resolution instead of Super Retina XDR OLED panel. Lastly, the iPhone 9 will roughly measure 138.5 x 67.4 x 7.8mm (8.6mm, including rear camera bump).

Coming to the specifications, the iPhone 9 is tipped to be powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset, which is also the brain behind the latest iPhone 11-series model. The SoC, which delivers 2.65GHz clock speed and is forged on the 7nm process, is likely to be paired with 3GB of RAM and 64GB/ 128GB storage options. Software-wise, the handset will reportedly boot iOS 13 out of the box, with features such as Dark Mode, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Siri improvements, and new AR experiences.

As for the price, iPhone 9 is said to be the first low-cost iPhone since the iPhone SE in 2016. It’s believed to be priced at $399 (about Rs 28,000) for the base variant, which is almost half of the $649 price tag of the new iPhone 11. The handset is rumoured to arrive in Silver, Space Grey, and (PRODUCT)Red colour options.
