“According to Ming-Chi Kuo, production of the new iPhone in both Foxconn and Pegatron facilities has been delayed due to Coronavirus”
iPhone 9 aka iPhone SE 2 is rumoured to be an affordable iPhone from Apple that was previously reported to launch some time in March. However, the iPhone 9/ iPhone SE 2 launch could be delayed now due to the Coronavirus outbreak in China. A Reuters report revealed that there have been production delays at Foxconn factories, while noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that there has been a delay in the production of new iPhones by a week or more, which in turn may lead to a significant impact on the shipments of the upcoming iPhone 9.
Kuo noted that two of Apple’s manufacturing and assembly partners, Foxconn and Pegatron are tasked with the major chunk of iPhone 9 production, and both of them have been affected by delays in resuming work post the Chinese New Year holidays. Foxconn’s Zhengzhou factory is said to be a critical, high volume iPhone 9 production site, and while it was expected to resume work on February 2nd, production at the plant was delayed by at least one week, and might extend further. While Foxconn’s Shenzhen plant is not said to be involved in iPhone 9 production, it too has seen at least a one-week delay in resuming production after being initially expected to resume on February 10th.
As for Pegatron, the manufacturer’s plant in Kushan, China was expected to begin production work on February 10th. However, a delay of “at least several days” at the factory has been quoted by 9to5Mac. At this point, Kuo further agreed that there are multiple uncertainties in the market, which makes it difficult to make a concrete prediction on the exact volume of impact the factory reopening delays may have on the shipment of the iPhone 9’s units.
Foxconn made a statement on the matter to Reuters, stating that it is waiting for a go-ahead from the local authorities before reopening its factories, which will be critical to prevent anyone from getting infected due to work. This momentary setback is likely to impact the overall technology market with delays in shipments and low demand, which in turn may lead to low unit sales of iPhones for Apple, at least for the better part of 2020.
