- Apple will reportedly use Wistron to manufacture iPhone SE 2020 in India
- Apple already assembles iPhone XR, iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s in the country
- Local manufacturing will allow Apple to avoid 20 percent tax on imported models
Apple will soon start assembling the iPhone SE 2020 in India, according to a new report by The Information, citing a person familiar with the matter. The iPhone SE 2020 is the latest “affordable” iPhone from the company that succeeds the previous iPhone SE. Interestingly, Apple began locally manufacturing in India in 2017 starting with the original iPhone SE. Over the past few years, the Cupertino giant has been assembling a few iPhone models in India that also include the iPhone XR, iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s.
Apple is using two suppliers for manufacturing iPhone models in India – Foxconn and Wistron. The iPhone SE 2020 will reportedly be assembled by Wistron and will allow Apple to avoid paying 20 percent tax on imported iPhones. The iPhone models manufactured in the country will carry the “Assembled in India” tag on their boxes.
As of now, the iPhone SE 2020 is being manufactured in China. As per the report, one supplier in China has been asked to start shipping components for the iPhone SE 2020 to Wistron in India from July. iPhone SE 2020 units that will be made in India may also come with a cheaper price tag compared to the current price, although there is no official word on this yet. To recall, the iPhone SE 2020 price in India starts at Rs 42,500, which is significantly higher when compared to its US pricing of USD 399 (approx Rs 30,000).
Apple has typically manufactured older iPhone models in India and it would be the first time that the company would be assembling a newly launched iPhone. While the iPhone SE 2020 is a new smartphone, it does come with an old iPhone 8-like design. Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 series is yet to be made in India and there is no word on whether this will happen. In addition to locally manufacturing iPhones, Apple is also looking to launch its first retail store and a dedicated e-commerce platform in the country as the company aims to increase its presence in the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
