Who should buy iPhone SE 2020
If you’re an iPhone 7 or previous-generation iPhone users, including iPhone 6, 6s and SE, the iPhone SE 2020 is worth an upgrade. The SE 2020 not only comes with the same form factor as the handset you’re using now but keeps you relevant to the Apple ecosystem without burning a big hole in your pocket. The handset runs iOS 13 out of the box and will continue to get software-updates from Apple for the next four years.
Who shouldn’t buy iPhone SE 2020
If the compact design is not what you’re looking for, you’re better off with smartphones other than iPhone SE 2020. Thereby, for iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 8 Plus users, it makes more sense to upgrade to iPhone XR instead of SE 2020 considering they are used to the bigger screen size.
What about iPhone 8 users?
The iPhone 8 users are good for at least a year as it’s bound to get Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 update. But, if they feel like updating, they can go either with iPhone SE 2020 or iPhone XR, depending on the screen size they are comfortable with and the chipset they want.
The SE 2020, as stated above, has the same design/ form factor as the iPhone 8 – in fact, much of the hardware is the same too, except for the latest chipset and the software running out of the box.
As for the iPhone XR, you’ll get contemporary bezel-less design and high screen-to-body ratio. The handset comes with a 30 percent bigger screen size compared to iPhone SE 2020 and Face ID – which despite much criticism – is said to be more secure than the Touch ID. That said, the iPhone XR rocks A12 Bionic chipset, which isn’t as powerful as A13 chipset, and costs slightly more than iPhone SE 2020.
iPhone SE 2020 vs iPhone XR specifications and features
The iPhone SE 2020 targets the niche audience looking for a compact smartphone as well as people have an older iPhone and want to stay in the Apple ecosystem without paying upwards of Rs 50,000. The handset ships with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with 16:9 aspect ratio. Though the phone comes with huge bezels, it’s still more compact than the iPhone XR or iPhone 11 – which comes with 6.1-inch 19:9 display. The iPhone SE 2020 measures 138.4mm x 67.3mm x 7.3mm and weighs 148 grams.
The handset is powered by the newer A13 Bionic chipset paired with 256GB storage onboard. For photography, the iPhone SE 2020 rocks a single 12MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, dual-pixel PDAF, OIS, and dual-tone, dual-LED flash. Camera features include 4K video, time-lapse, and slow-mo video recording. The front camera is a 7MP sensor that supports portrait mode and 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps. The phone offers a battery life similar to the iPhone 8 and supports 18W fast charging and wireless charging. Other features include water-resistance up to 1 metre, stereo playback, Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and Wi-Fi calling.
iPhone XR comes with bigger screen size and retails around the same price tag as the latest affordable smartphone from Apple. The iPhone XR price in India starts at Rs 52,500 following the recent price hike, but it’s listed on Flipkart at Rs 49,900. The price is expected to go further down during the e-commerce sales as we’ve seen a couple of times in the past.
Coming to the specifications, the iPhone XR ships with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD notch display and Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset ticking at its core. The handset runs iOS 12 out of the box. For photography, the phone sports a single wide-angle 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture at the back and a 7-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture on the front for selfies and video calling. The phone is equipped with 3GB of RAM, 64GB/ 128GB storage options, and is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. A 2,716mAh battery rounds up the specs sheet.
