Jio becomes India’s first VoLTE-based international roaming network

“The Jio International VoLTE roaming service will allow users to enjoy HD voice calling and 4G high-speed internet while travelling abroad”

Jio –  India’s fastest growing telecom operator – has announced VoLTE-based international roaming service on its network. This will allow users travelling outside India to enjoy the Jio network with HD voice calling and 4G high-speed internet. The telco has partnered with Japan’s KDDI network to kickstart the service.

The KDDI – Japanese telecommunication corporation – is the first international mobile service provider to avail Jio’s VoLTE calling and LTE data. The users travelling to the country will have access to high-speed data and voice services on Jio’s all-IP, 4G-exclusive network. The service will also be applicable to international travellers visiting India. As of now, it is limited to KDDI users who first have to activate the roaming plan before travelling to India.

“Reliance Jio is focused on delivering the best data and voice experience to all of India and those who visit India. We welcome KDDI customers to Jio as the first international VoLTE and HD roaming users in India,” said Mark Yarkosky, Jio in a press statement.

The Jio network – opened to the public in 2016 – has been setting new benchmarks in the network coverage in the country for a while now. The company has catapulted itself to the ninth largest mobile operator in the world with over 252 million subscribers within two years of launch. The telco has over 96 percent LTE coverage in India, says the recent report from OpenSignal. And as per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Jio as the fastest network with an average download speed of 22.3 Mbps in its October 2018 report.
