JioCinema breaks records in TATA IPL 2023 opener: 50 crore viewers, becomes most downloaded app in a single day

Reliance Jio which recently acquired rights to air the TATA Indian Premier League 2023 matches on its online streaming platform, JioCinema, has been applauded with great viewership numbers on its maiden broadcast. JioCinema recorded a peak of six crore unique viewers during the Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings fixture. The JioCinema app also observed a record 2.5 crore downloads in a single day. And with these numbers, the Mukesh Ambani-led platform has set some benchmark statistics in the industry.

JioCinema becomes the most downloaded app just as TATA IPL 2023 begins

JioCinema secured official digital broadcasting rights for the Indian Premier League 2023 after having spent over Rs 23,000 crore. The TATA IPL 2023 matches are being streamed on JioCinema for free, much like the FIFA World Cup that was streamed on the same platform last year.

JioCinema broadcasted its first match yesterday which was played between the Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings. The statistics show that the watch was viewed by over six crore unique viewers, and over 1.6 crore viewers were watching the match live simultaneously. The total match views too reached a peak of over 50 crore viewers which is one of the highest for sporting events on a digital platform. 

In comparison, YouTube which is a popular streaming service secured monthly viewership of 51.4 crores. Thus the single-day viewership on JioCinema seems to be tailing the monthly viewership of YouTube. JioCinema had also been successful during the FIFA World Cup 2022. On the final day, JioCinema reportedly witnessed 32 million viewers watching the final match which was played between Argentina and France.
