MediaTek Dimensity 800 mid-range chipset announced, launching in early 2020

“Smartphones powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 800 chipset will be launching around mid-2020”

MediaTek has announced a new chipset, the Dimensity 800, at its recent Product Communication conference. The chipset is positioned for mid-range and upper mid-range smartphones, and will be officially made available to smartphone manufacturers in early 2020. Post availability, the chipset will reportedly feature in production smartphones as early as mid-2020. Despite its unveiling, MediaTek is yet to unveil the official specifications of the chipset, which should come our way by early 2020.

It is not yet clear if the Dimensity 800 chipset from MediaTek will support 5G connectivity as well, but given that 5G smartphones are slated to go mainstream through 2020, there is a good chance that it will offer optional 5G modem compatibility to bring the latest connectivity standards to mainstream devices. The Dimensity 800 is a part of a new chipset portfolio from MediaTek, which saw the Dimensity 1000 flagship chipset being announced recently.

During its launch, MediaTek made direct comparison of the Dimensity 1000 with offerings from rival chipset makers, namely the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 990. Given that the Dimensity 1000 chipset is positioned right below the flagship SKU, it is likely that the Dimensity 800 chipset will directly rival chipsets such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 series, which is seeing application in a wide range of devices such as the Redmi K20 mid-range smartphone from Xiaomi.

It will be interesting to see the technical configuration of the Dimensity 800 chipset. The Dimensity 1000 features ARM’s latest generation Cortex-A77 cores, along with the Mali-G77 GPU also fabricated by ARM. The Dimensity 800, as a result, will likely feature slightly inferior cores, as well as power consumption differences in accordance with their market positions. While there is no confirmation yet, it is possible that mid-range devices priced onward of about Rs 15,000 can be privy to the new MediaTek chipset.
