- Dimensity 820 is the new mid-range premium chipset from MediaTek
- HyperEngine 2.0 optimisations bring reduced latency during gaming and faster response times
- Dimensity 820 SoC is designed for global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America and Europe
MediaTek Dimensity 820 5G chipset has been announced as a successor to the Dimensity 800 that was unveiled earlier this year at CES 2020. The new chipset brings better CPU and GPU performance, support for full HD+ 120Hz displays and an integrated 5G (sub-6GHz) modem. The chipset also includes MediaTek’s MiraVision for HDR features such as vivid visuals in videos. Plus, MediaTek APU 3.0 (AI Processing Unit) that is claimed to provide impressive AI-camera capabilities without any quality loss is also included. The chipset supports dual SIM and dual standby (DSDS) 5G technology.
The MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC has four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and retains the 2GHz Arm Cortex-A55 cores from the predecessor. It features Mali G57 GPU graphics plus HyperEngine 2.0 enhancements, supports up to 16GB LPDDR4x RAM and UFS storage. The integrated 5G modem design uses dynamic bandwidth part (BWP) adaption and connected mode discontinuous reception (C-DRX) power-saving technologies. The 5G Carrier Aggregation technology promises higher average speeds and seamless handover between two 5G connection areas, thereby ensuring the most reliable connectivity.
HyperEngine 2.0 tech includes optimisations that claim to reduce latency during gaming and faster response times. It can automatically adjust the CPU, CPU and memory resources to improve performance. MediaTek’s Imagiq 5.0 HDR-native image signal processor (ISP) supports up to four concurrent cameras and up to 80MP sensors. It can record 4K videos and capture frames at different exposures and combine them into a single video stream, in real-time. Connectivity options that come with the SoC include dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS + Glonass + Beidou + Galileo. The Dimensity 820 SoC is designed for global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America and Europe. Redmi 10X will be one of the first phones to ship with the MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC.
