“The Mi 9 is Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship smartphone scheduled to launch on February 20th”
The Xiaomi Mi 9 smartphone hype is getting real as we get to know its salient features via official source ahead of the release. Xiaomi is slated to launch the device at an event in China on February 20th (later in Barcelona at MWC 2019 on February 24th). In a series of posts shared on Weibo, Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun has shared details about the Mi 9’s cameras, display, security, and performance.
To start with, the Mi 9 smartphone’s AI triple rear cameras will feature a whopping 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 primary sensor with f/1.75 aperture lens. It’ll be mated with 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens (f/2.2 aperture) and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. For selfies, the phone gets a 20-megapixel shooter on the front. The company backed the specifications with some camera samples that looks decent and full of details.
Xiaomi also confirmed that the handset will come with an edge-to-edge display with a waterdrop-style notch. The promotional posters of the Mi 9 reveals that it’ll boast of 90.7 percent screen-to-body ratio and have a full-HD+ AMOLED display supplied by Samsung. Xiaomi says it has a 103.8 percent NTSC super wide colour gamut and up to 600 nits of brightness. The panel also seems to have a bunch of optimisations for different usage scenarios such as night mode and game mode. Lastly, the Mi 9 screen will be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and have an eye-protection certification from the German Institute of Electrical Engineers.
While the screen size has not been confirmed, the brand revealed it’ll have a fingerprint sensor underneath, to nobody’s surprise. As stated by the company, the in-display sensor is improved and has large 5-micron pixel size – the larger size means that the sensor will work on a larger area compared to phones with in-display fingerprint sensor launched last year. The sensor on Mi 9 is said to be 25 percent faster and optimised for special cases such as dry fingers, cold temperature, and poor visibility.
Under the hood, the Mi 9 will have Qualcomm’s 7nm Snapdragon 855 SoC ticking at its core. The chipset will be mated with Game Turbo mode to further enhance the performance, and as per Xiaomi, will intelligently predict the complex scenes of gamers and dispatch system resources in real time to effectively avoid any jam. The handset will also come with a game toolbox where users can see the real-time performance of the CPU, GPU usage rate, and game frame number.
As seen with last year’s flagship model Mi 8, Xiaomi will also launch a special edition of Mi 9 smartphone. Lei Jun reveals it’ll be called Mi 9 Transparent Edition and will boast of 12GB RAM. It also seems to have wireless charging support. While the handset’s other specifications have not been revealed, it’s expected to be the same as the standard edition. That’s all we know so far!
