“Neither the Mi MIX 3 nor the Honor Magic 2 are available in India yet.”
In 2018, the quest to completely nullify smartphone bezels led OEMs to some crazy innovative ideas, one of which was the slider front camera. Xiaomi and Honor were the two Chinese smartphone makers that made the idea materialize with the Mi MIX 3 and the Honor Magic 2. And while these two smartphones may look like they have the same slider mechanism, they are anything but. YouTuber Zack Nelson on his popular channel JerryRigEverything took the poor Mi MIX 3 apart to reveal how Xiaomi has made the addictive slider on the bezel-less MIX device possible.
While the video shows a lot of the other internals of the flagship Mi MIX 3, it is only at the end of the video that we can see the slider mechanism. As the YouTuber found out, the Mi MIX 3 users a very simple magnetic chemistry to achieve the function of the slider. Unlike other complex motorized machines employed by the likes of Vivo and OPPO, Xiaomi’s slider is also less prone to failure because it uses simple magnets. As a matter of fact, independent tests showed the slider successfully complete 6,00,000 times which is impressive. Xiaomi has placed one magnet in each half of the two parts of the MIX 3 (first impressions). The slider comes out when the magnets repel each other and they are in an attracting position when it slides back in place. A ribbon cable hooks through a hole in the motherboard to connect the two halves and makes the screen functional. In comparison, Honor Magic 2 uses simple side rails that facilitate the movement of the two halves of the smartphone and a ribbon cable is here as well.
Previously, a torture test of the Mi MIX 3 was also conducted on the same channel where the handset passed all tests including the bend test successfully. The Mi MIX 3 is a well-built device while the Find X although more elegant is fragile and did not survive the bend test on Zack’s tests. The Mi MIX 3 has yet to make it to India although it has launched in several other non-Chinese countries as of 2019.
