Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8 at Windows Phone Developer Summit

Just now Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8 on the second day of its three days event at Windows Developer Summit in San Francisco. Yesterday, on the first day of the event, the tech giant unveiled its own brand tablet dubbed ‘Surface.’ The unveiling event started with a blue and moody theme with array of blue candies in the press room. First an opening video was played with many quotes and accolades for Windows Phone. About 100k apps were shown in the pretty good video and immediately after it corporate VP of Windows Phone, Terry Myerson, takes on the stage saying hello to everyone present in the press room. Next starts the good, better and best features of Windows Phone 8. Below are some of the key points:

  • Windows Phone 8 got good battery life and its performance is great.
  • It will support multi-core chips. The device will turn on cores for accessing extra processing power at the time when it is required, and switch it off when battery life is to be preserved.
  • It got ability of working on different screen resolutions. It also works on HD 720p format.
  • A new wallet app is included in Windows Phone 8 so that the device acts as credit cards as well as membership cards. It supports NFC (Near field communication) payments.
  • Windows Phone 8 got built-in maps with turn-by-turn navigation feature.
  • It also got warming alert if any website contains malware.
  • Camera Extras include self-time, panorama, burst mode and SmartGroup Shot.
  • Oops! Windows Phone 8 won’t be running on existing devices. So, sorry Lumia 900 users.
  • Apps update to deliver OTA.
  • OEMs: Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, and HTC.
  • Updates coming soon for maps, transportation, and Drive apps.
  • It does secure boot, device encryption, and also flexible app distribution model that IT managers can control.
  • Microsoft told to the developers to make use of XAML in building apps.
  • Windows Phone 8 is able to launch app using speech.
