“MIUI 12 is not expected to launch until late 2020 at least, but at least we now know one of the important features it will bring”
Xiaomi had launched MIUI 11 back in September and it brings improved dark mode and is being rolled out to most Redmi and Xiaomi phones. However, there are a few third-party apps that still don’t support it. Now, a Xiaomi engineer confirmed on Weibo that MIUI 12 will support a system-wide dark mode. Notably, the new version won’t arrive until Q3 2020 and the executive hasn’t revealed any other features of MIUI 12 at the moment.
Additionally, the Xiaomi engineer also turned down recent rumour that claimed that OPPO is poaching MIUI engineers for its ColorOS. He said that MIUI engineers are working 13 hours a day and so don’t have enough time on hands for any interviews.
Furthermore, responding to why the MIUI 11 always-on display doesn’t support custom GIF loop playback animations, the Xiaomi engineer said that custom GIF animation on always-on displays will cause power consumption issues. This is the reason the feature hasn’t been included in the latest MIUI skin. To remind you, Xu Jieyun, the General Manager of Public Relations, confirmed back in October that the company has already started working on the new MIUI 12 OS.
Separately, Xiaomi patented a new smartphone design with a secondary display at the rear. This would display caller ID, music playback controls, messages and more. The front has slim bezels with a sizeable chin below the screen. There is no cutout at the back, which suggests it might have an in-display sensor for security. The patent design shows quad-camera setup at the back which might also function as selfie cameras.
