While Motorola’s G series might be more popular, the Lenovo-owned brand’s E-series also offers feature-packed phones and more value for your money. The newest offering from the company’s stables is the Moto E5 and Moto E5 Plus. But do these new smartphones just bring evolutionary upgrades or offer some much-needed changes as well? To find that out, we decided to compare the Moto E5 Plus with its predecessor, the Moto E4 Plus (first impressions).

Starting with the design, the E5 Plus is the first smartphone in the E series to feature a glass-sandwich design. It also follows the modern design trend of ultra-tall 18:9 displays. In contrast, the E4 Plus offers a unibody metallic construction. Thanks to the bezel-less design, the E5 Plus manages to pack a larger 6-inch display in the same form factor as its predecessor, which has a 5.5-inch panel. The Moto E4 Plus retains a home button below the display, while its successor uses software buttons for navigation the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back.

Moto E4 Plus offers a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels, which translates to a pixel density of around 267 pixels per inch, while the Moto E5 Plus has a 6-inch display with a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 268. In the performance department, the Moto E4 Plus is powered by the MediaTek MT6737 chip, while the new E5 Plus boasts Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 processor paired with Adreno 505 GPU. There’s not a great difference between the two, though the latter is slightly faster.

In terms of the optics, the primary camera on the Moto E4 Plus is rated 13-megapixels with an aperture of f/2.0, while the Moto E5 Plus offers a 12-megapixel f/2.0 snapper. Lastly, the Moto E4 Plus ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, while the Moto E5 Plus instead ships with the newer Android 8.0 Oreo.

While there aren’t many similarities, both phones feature 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage onboard. However, the E4 Plus is also available in the more affordable 16GB model. In the camera department, both these smartphones get a 5-megapixel shooter. Both the Moto E5 Plus and E4 Plus are fuelled by monstrous 5,000mAh batteries, though they differ in their charge ratings. The E5 Plus has 15W TurboPower, which gets you 6 hours of juice within just 15 minutes of charging, while the E4 Plus comes bundled with 10W TurboPower.
