Moto G73 vs Redmi Note 12 camera comparison: which one takes better photos?

Moto G73 (review) and Redmi Note 12 (review) compete closely with one another under Rs 20,000 segment in India. Both are capable 5G smartphones that aim to offer an all-around performance to their consumers. If you are on the fence with either of these devices, this camera comparison should definitely help. Read on to find out which smartphone between Redmi Note 12 and Moto G73 is better at taking photographs. But before we get to the results, let’s check out the camera specs of these phones.

Moto G73 vs Redmi Note 12 5G camera specifications

The Redmi Note 12 5G ships with triple rear cameras with 48MP (f/1.8) primary sensor, 8MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens, and 2MP (f/2.4) macro unit. The cameras support dual LED flash, HDR, and up to 1080p 30fps video recording. Up front, the handset packs a 13MP snapper with an f/2.45 aperture lens for selfies and video calling in the punch-hole setup.

The Moto G73, on the other hand, rocks a 16MP (f/2.4) front camera and a dual-rear camera setup comprising a 50MP primary sensor, which Motorola claims comes from last year’s premium Edge 30 Pro smartphone. The main sensor is aided by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, which also doubles up as a macro sensor. The handset comes with HDR and a single LED flash.

Daylight HDR

There is hardly any difference between the camera performance of the Moto G73 and the Redmi Note 12 in daylight with HDR. Both devices are equally quick to focus and save images in the gallery. As for the result, it is not a day and night difference, but as you may notice in the camera shots above, the colours look well-saturated on the Redmi smartphone. The Moto smartphone offers a slightly cooler tone, which makes the RGB colours extra bright. That said, the 50MP primary sensor on Moto G73 captures more details and offers better dynamic range than the 48MP on Redmi Note 12.

Ultra-wide images

Unlike the main camera, the ultra-wide lens on the Redmi Note 12 and Moto G73 outputs the same 8MP resolution images. Both images lack sharpness around the edges. However, it is the Moto G73 that captures more likeable wide-angle shots compared to its counterpart, even with a cooler tone. You will also notice the Moto image has more details at the centre compared to the Redmi Note 12 image, which lacks sharpness. The colours are closer to reality.

Winner: Moto G73

Macro images

Even though the Redmi Note 12 has a dedicated 2MP snapper for macro images, it couldn’t beat the Moto G73. The Redmi smartphone consistently failed to offer a macro shot with good detailing and accurate colours. This wasn’t the case with the Moto G73, which uses its 8MP ultra-wide snapper for macro shots. Even though sharpness goes for a toss, the handset offers acceptable images for the price.

Winner: Moto G73

Selfies

For selfies, the 16MP snapper on the Moto G73 appears to be doing a better job with facial detail and skin tones. The 13MP selfie camera on the Redmi Note 12 tends to smoothen out the details, especially those in the shadows. The Moto G73, on the other hand, does well to retain the facial detail and also, to get the colours right.

Winner: Moto G73

Lowlight photography

The lowlight capabilities of the Redmi Note 12 and the Moto G73 aren’t very impressive, but they get the job done. Out of all the cameras, the primary one does the best job at capturing images with ample details in low light and indoors on both smartphones. Be that as it may, the handsets tend to expose certain colours ever so slightly. If you take a look at the shots of a mall closely, you will notice the Redmi Note 12 has trouble balancing out the whites, while the Moto G73 over-exposes the reds and blues. Just because the Moto image has less noise and more details than its arch-rival, the round goes to the Moto G73.

Winner: Moto G73

Night mode

Moto G73 and Redmi Note 12 both come with a dedicated night mode. The latter kicks in automatically on the Moto smartphone in low light, but you have the option to manually turn it on as well. Both phones smoothen out the details to keep the noise level down, but the Moto G73 again comes out on top here. As seen from the images, the Moto smartphone kept the highlights defined with the trees, and unlike the Redmi Note 12, didn’t let the street light’s flare run all over the frame.

Winner: Moto G73

Verdict

The Moto G73 is no doubt a winner here by winning five out of six rounds. This can be attributed to its flagship-grade ultra pixel 50MP primary and a 16MP selfie camera that captures more details than its competitor. However, as stated above, the handset tends to oversaturate the colours. If you don’t want that and are looking for a smartphone that offers a more natural-looking shot at the expense of losing out on some details, then the Redmi Note 12 is the way to go.
