Motorola Edge 50 vs Nothing Phone (2a) Plus battery comparison: which one provides superior backup?

Despite their differences in OEM, chipset, and design, the Motorola Edge 50 and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus (review) have a few notable similarities. Both are priced at Rs 27,999 for the base 8GB RAM variant in India, and each features a 5,000mAh battery. If you’re wondering which of these smartphones offers better battery performance, this article provides a comparative analysis. We tested both devices using the PCMark battery benchmark, as well as through gaming and video streaming tests to find out the best smartphone in terms of battery performance.

PCMark battery test

PCMark battery test runs a series of tasks on mobile phones till the battery life drops to 20 percent. Both Motorola Edge 50 and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus were put to the test with 100 percent battery and volume and brightness levels set to 50 percent. The Motorola Edge 50 lasted for a good 10 hours and 59 minutes, whereas the Nothing smartphone ran the test for 14 hours and 34 minutes.

Video streaming

On our YouTube video streaming, the Motorola Edge 50 battery dropped by 5 percent after 30 minutes with the maximum supported resolution, 50 per cent brightness, and 50 percent volume levels. In similar settings, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus consumed 4 percent battery life, which is equivalent to 200mAh as opposed to 250mAh compared to its competitor.

Gaming

In gaming too, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus offers better battery management than its arch-rival. The handset’s battery percentage dropped by 19 percent on aggregate after playing BGMI, Call of Duty, and Real Racing 3 for 30 minutes each. The Motorola Edge 50, on the contrary, utilised 26 percent of its battery life after playing the same games for a similar duration and resolution.

Charging speeds

In terms of charging speed, the Motorola Edge 50 has a distinct advantage with its 68W fast charging capability. It can charge from 20 percent to 100 percent in roughly 40 minutes using the included charger in regular mode, whereas, in charge boost mode, the handset achieves a full charge in 30 minutes. Conversely, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus supports 50W charging, but does not come with a charger in the box. When using a compatible third-party PD charger, it takes about 51 minutes to charge from 20 percent to 100 percent.

To conclude, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus offers superior battery optimisation compared to the Motorola Edge 50, excelling in benchmark tests, gaming, and streaming. However, the Motorola Edge 50 stands out with its faster charging speeds and includes a charger in the box. So, the choice between the two depends on your preference.
