The Motorola Edge 60 Pro (first impressions) recently joined its siblings, the Motorola Edge 60 Fusion (review) and Edge 60 Stylus (review), in India. The latest device has a curved pOLED display, a robust camera setup, impressive performance, and a massive battery. We compared the battery performance of the Edge 60 Pro with that of the Nothing Phone (3a) (review) to see which of these two offers better battery life in the sub-Rs 30,000 segment of the Indian smartphone market. Both devices were put through synthetic benchmark, YouTube video streaming, gaming, and charging tests. This is how they fared.
Verdict
- PCMark battery test: The PCMark Battery test is the go-to test to determine a device’s general battery life. The app runs a battery of tasks on the device, simulating everyday tasks until the battery level drops below 20 percent. In this test, the Nothing Phone (3a) outlasted the Motorola Edge 60 Pro by 5.5 hours despite having a smaller battery.
- YouTube video streaming (30 minutes): Streaming online videos is one of the most common use cases of smartphones and a major battery hogger. To determine the streaming battery efficiency of these devices, we played a full HD video on YouTube for 30 minutes on each device with 50 percent volume and brightness. With all variables remaining the same, both smartphones lost exactly 3 percent of battery in our testing.
- Gaming: One of the common causes of smartphone battery depletion is gaming, another widespread use case. We played titles like COD: Mobile, BGMI, and Real Racing 3 on both devices for 30 minutes each with identical graphic settings and measured the battery drop after 90 minutes. Here, the Edge 60 Pro lost 16 percent of its battery compared to the 21 percent battery drop on the Nothing Phone (3a). The difference is not huge and won’t make a difference in real life.
- Charging test: For the charging test, we drained both the Motorola Edge 60 Pro and the Nothing Phone (3a) to 20 percent battery and charged them fully again. Thanks to the 90W fast charging technology, the Motorola device charges 15 minutes faster than the Nothing Phone (3a) with 50W fast charging support.
Device Charging time from 20-100 percent Motorola Edge 60 Pro 36 minutes Nothing Phone (3a) 52 minutes
The Motorola Edge 60 Pro has a slightly bigger battery than the Nothing Phone (3a). However, despite that, the Nothing device lasts longer in the synthetic benchmark and performs almost identically in streaming and gaming tests. This can be attributed to a better optimised processor and software. When it comes to battery, you can pick either of the two and enjoy the same level of backup on a full charge. However, if charging speed is a priority for you, then the Motorola Edge 60 Pro is the one to pick.
Both smartphones come with an identical price of Rs 29,999 for their base variants where the Motorola Edge 60 Pro has an advantage with 256GB storage as opposed to 128GB on the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro.
