Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: design
The Motorola Razr 50 comes with a refreshed design at the back compared to the Motorola Razr 40. It has a bigger cover screen with a vegan leather back and aluminium frame than its predecessor’s compact screen with a vegan leather finish and aluminium frame. Both phones come in a clamshell foldable form factor.
However, the Motorola Razr 50 has a new Teardrop Hinge, the same one that we saw on the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, which the company claims to be the thinnest and lightest hinge in its segment. The Motorola Razr 50 also offers better protection against rain but lacks dust protection with an IPX8 rating than its predecessor’s IP52 rating.
Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: display
Both phones have identical primary display specifications, but the Motorola Razr 50 supports a 120Hz refresh rate, while the Razr 40 has 144Hz refresh rate support, meaning the last-gen Razr offers a smoother viewing experience than the newer one. While the refresh rate is a downgrade with the Razr 50, the company increased the peak brightness to 3,000 nits compared to the Razr 40’s 1,400 nits, which will result in an improved HDR quality experience.
The company has significantly upgraded the cover screen with the new Motorola Razr foldable. It now has a bigger 3.6-inch, clearer FHD+ resolution, and smoother 90Hz refresh rate than the Razr 40’s 1.5-inch display. While the Razr 40’s cover screen only showed time, date, battery, and notifications, the Razr 50 has a fully functional cover display.
Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: performance
The Motorola Razr 50 comes with the all-new MediaTek Dimensity 7300X SoC with Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage. Since it’s a brand new SoC, we don’t know how well it performs against the Motorola Razr 40’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC with Adreno 644 GPU.
We know that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a capable chipset, as it scored 5,84,312 points on AnTuTu, with 1,020 points in the single-core test and 2,529 points in the multi-core test on Geenbench. However, you’ll have to wait for our detailed Motorola Razr 50 review to learn about its performance.
Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: cameras
In the camera department, the Motorola Razr 50, on paper, has a downgraded 50MP primary shooter than its predecessor’s 64MP sensor, offering more detailed and clearer images. However, the secondary camera is the same 13MP ultrawide lens on both devices for wide-angle shots.
Moreover, both phones have a 32MP snapper for social media-ready selfies and video calls. While on paper the Motorola Razr 40 might seem a better camera phone among the two, we suggest you wait for the real-world photography performance.
Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: battery and charging
Both phones ship with the same 4,200mAh battery capacity with 30W charging support. However, the Motorola Razr 50 supports slightly faster 15W wireless charging than the Motorola Razr 40’s 5W wireless charging. Anyway, you can expect a similar battery backup and charging time with both devices as they share the same battery and charging specifications.
Motorola Razr 50 vs Motorola Razr 40: software
The Motorola Razr 50 has the advantage of running Android 14, offering the newest features and improvements right out of the box. The company promises similar software updates with Razr 50 and Razr 40: three major OS releases and four years of security patches. However, the Motorola Razr 50 will get updates until Android 17, but the Motorola Razr 40 will be updated to Android 16.
The Razr 50 also includes Moto AI and Google Gemini Advanced features for better software experience. It has a slew of AI photography features and photo editing AI tools. Moreover, it also has a few handy AI tools like Help Me Learn, Help Me Write, and Help Me Plan Events, among other features.
Verdict
After taking a detailed look at every aspect of the Motorola Razr 50 and the Motorola Razr 40, it’s clear that the newest Motorola clamshell foldable offers remarkable upgrades over its predecessor. It has a superior cover display, better protection against water splashes, AI features, faster wireless charging support, and will get an additional Android OS update.
However, the Motorola Razr 40 also has a few advantages: a smoother main display, a better primary camera, and protection against dust particles. Moreover, it has an almost identical hardware setup to the Motorola Razr 50 in the other departments.
