The Tamil industry has churned out quite a few gems in the past year, including Dhanush’s Vaathi and an interesting, latest film Single Shankarum Smartphone Simranum apart from the recent thriller Run Baby Run. 1. Vaathi

With Dhanush and Samyuktha Menon in the lead roles, Vaathi is a one-of-its-kind bilingual regional movie that has been shot in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. As for the story, it is based in a small town in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It revolves around a simple guy who is struggling and wants to fight a war against the abrupt transition to privatisation of education in India during those times. Since its theatrical release, period action drama Vaathi has been appreciated across the board by critics and audience alike.

2. Single Shankarum Smartphone Simranum

With a similar origin story to Kapil Sharma’s theatrical release, Zwigato, Single Shankarum Smartphone Simranum is the story of a food delivery guy who stumbles upon a highly advanced AI-powered smartphone that changes his life for the better. This phone has all the emotions that a girl possesses, which makes him fall in love with it. But obviously, unnatural things must come to an end. 3. Run Baby Run

4. Dada

This 2023 Tamil film is a coming-of-age love story that shows the offbeat story of a single father and his struggles in society. It shows how a young man goes from being a bachelor to a father, who is too single. It reflects on the faults in our society and how gender-neutral roles in parenting aren’t really that well accepted by people around us. 5. Varisu

Helmed by Vamshi Paidipally, Varisu is an action drama movie starring Vijay is the lead role. The emotional story revolves around the father-son relationship, portrayed through the characters of a business tycoon Rajendran Palanisamy (Sarath Kumar) and his three sons –  Vijay (Thalapathy Vijay), Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam). Rajendra lives with his three sons and is looking for his successor. Vijay is the prodigal son with a happy-go-lucky nature who doesn’t always agree with his father and has no interest in the business. However, drastic turn of events compels Vijay to become the successor/varisu of Rajendra. But why?

    Thunivu is an action packed heist film starring Ajith Kumar in the lead role. The story revolves around a heist that has been hijacked by a mysterious interloper named Dare Devil (played by Ajith Kumar). This unnerving turn of events shock the bank officials as well as government officials, including police and ministers. Moreover, the identity and the real motive of Dare Devil also bothers the officials as the bank heist is not the real reason behind all of this.     Sembi is an emotional drama movie written and directed by Prabu Solomon. In this movie, a bus named Anbu gives a gripping narrative of the stories of its passengers travelling from Kodaikanal to Dindigul. One such story is of Sembi, who is the grandchild of Veerathayi. Dependent on each other, they both both live a simple life in a beautiful hilly village of Kodaikanal. However, an unfortunate incident upends their lives – the young and innocent Sembi is assaulted. Veerathayi vows to avenge, but she faces many hurdles and hardships, including political intervention as the miscreants have an influential background. Not bogged down by anything, Veerathayi races against time and does everything in her capacity to bring the miscreants to justice.
