The week that just went brought in a number of new launches and quite a few announcements too. As the week was drawing to a close, Xiaomi announced a Mi phone premiere in India which will coincide with the launch of the ASUS ZenFone 2 in the country. Lenovo, Microsoft and OPPO launched new devices, with HTC expected to bring in its latest flagship. Let us take a quick look at what all made it to the headlines this week.
Lenovo launched the A7000 in India for Rs 8,999 this week. The device is the world’s first with Dolby ATMOS surround sound to give a pleasant audio experience through headphones. It offers a 5.5-inch HD display and a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6752M chipset ticking at 1.5GHz. It will be going up against the YU Yureka (review), Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G (review) and the Honor 4X (review) in the country.
Microsoft launched the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL in the country this week for Rs 11,999 and Rs 15,799 respectively. Both of them come with the same internals which include a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and dual SIM abilities. They are differentiated by their screen sizes, cameras and battery capacities. The Lumia 640 will be a Flipkart exclusive while the Lumia 640 XL will be available through regular retail stores.
Xiaomi completed five years this week and to mark the same, announced that it will commence selling its products through Amazon and Snapdeal too, in addition to Flipkart. It has already begun selling its devices offline through Airtel’s stores and The Mobile Store retail chain. It has a pretty robust online and offline retail network in place now and will surely be looking to being among the top smartphone manufacturers in the country.
HTC launched the One M9+ this week in China. The smartphone shares a majority of its specs with the HTC One M9 but gets a 20MP duo camera setup, a bigger 5.2-inch QHD display and a 64-bit 2.2GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6795K processor to differentiate it from its sibling. The global rollout of the device is expected to begin soon.
ASUS will be launching the ZenFone 2 in India on April 23rd. The device will be launched in three variants in the country with the top-of-the line 4GB variant making its way to us too. The three models that are believed to touch base in India include the ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE551ML, ZenFone 2 ZE550ML, and the ZenFone 2 ZE500CL. Their pricing will play a key role in deciding their success in the country.
OPPO launched the N3 flagship device in the country this week for Rs 42,990. The smartphone has a 5.5-inch full HD display up front and a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor ticks at its heart. It has 206-degree 16MP swivel camera and a fingerprint reader to round off the package. The pre-bookings for the same have already commenced.
Lenovo launched the P70 smartphone in India this week for Rs 15,999. The smartphone is meant to strengthen the budget 4G LTE portfolio of the company in the country. The device sports a 5-inch HD display, a 64-bit 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek processor which gets coupled with a Mali T760-MP2 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It comes with a mammoth 4,000mAh battery to keep you going when others run out.
TRAI has just announced new ceiling rates for roaming tariffs in the country. From May 1st, the incoming calls on roaming will cost Re 0.45/minute and outgoing calls will cost Re 1.15 and Re 0.80 for STD and local calls respectively. You will be charged Re 0.25 and Re 0.38 for local and national messages respectively after the new guidelines come into effect. The service providers have already been informed about it.
Xiaomi has just announced that it will be holding a global event in India on April 23rd and has begun registrations for it too. It will be open to all Mi fans. The teaser for the event says ‘i IS COMING’ and that will be a Mi phone premiere. Company’s President and Co-Founder Bin Lin will also be present at the event which goes on to show India’s importance in Xiaomi’s future plans.
