Nokia 8, the company’s first Android flagship, gets a DxOMark rating of just 68

“The Nokia 8 comes with a dual 13MP camera setup on the rear”

Nokia’s return to the smartphone industry was a much-awaited event which finally took place last year. Under HMD Global, the company introduced its first Android flagship in the form of the Nokia 8. With earlier devices like the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 1020 already shining bright in the camera department, a lot was expected from the Nokia 8 (review). What’s more, the Nokia 8 is the brand’s first ever dual camera smartphone with Carl Zeiss optics.

However, when DxOMark reviewed the camera prowess of the Nokia 8, it failed to meet expectations. The Nokia 8 received a score of just 68from DxOMark, which is well below what other recent flagships have managed to achieve. In fact, even the three year-old Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the Apple iPhone 6 managed a score of 82 and 73 respectively. Currently, the Google Pixel 2 tops the ratings with a score of 98, closely followed by the Apple iPhone X which scored one point less. According to the review by DxOMark, the Nokia 8 received a score of 72 for photos and 62 for videos. The company stated that the Nokia 8 lost a lot of quality while zooming in photos, while the autofocus worked poorly when shooting video.

To recap, the Nokia 8 flaunts dual 13MP (RGB + monochrome) primary sensors with Carl Zeiss optics. It also comes with optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus and dual tone LED flash. The front camera is rated at 13MP with an aperture of f/2.0. Other specifications of thesmartphone include a 5.3-inch QHD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory that can extended with the help of a microSD card. DxOMark’s results are in line with our review, wherein we found that the camera image quality was not up to the standards that we expect from a Nokia flagship. Yes, they are not poor, but certainly not the best in class.
