Nokia 9 PureView India launch delayed due to “prioritisation” of budget smartphones

“So far in 2019, HMD Global has announced three affordable smartphones: Nokia 4.2, Nokia 3.2, and Nokia 2.2”

The Nokia 9 PureView (first impressions) smartphone launch in India is being delayed as the company is serving the market with what is relevant to the market.” While the flagship was teased by the official Nokia India Facebook page back in March, there has been no update since then. HMD Global has said that it wanted to launch the Nokia 9 PureView in India soon after its global unveiling, but the focus has been on budget-oriented models such as the Nokia 4.2, Nokia 3.2, and the recently-launched Nokia 2.2 smartphones.

Talking to NDTV Gadgets 360Pranav Shroff, Global Portfolio GM, HMD Global said, “We will definitely bring Nokia 9 PureView here. Ideally, we would have liked to have done it at the same time [as the global launch] but there is always prioritisation that happens – like the Nokia 2.2 is coming first to India.”

“The intent is to serve the market with what is relevant to the market. If you look at the India smartphone market, less than 1 percent of consumers shop over Rs 30,000,” Shroff added. “The reality is that this market we are specifically sitting in doesn’t buy in this segment.”

The Nokia 9 PureView is awaited eagerly in India, with photography fans looking forward to try out the penta-camera setup. The handset will mark the revival of the PureView brand, which was first introduced back in 2012 with the Symbian-powered Nokia 808 PureView. As for the Nokia 9 PureView, it was introduced at this year’s MWC 2019 earlier this year and packs five cameras at the back, which includes two colour (RGB) and three monochrome 12-megapixel sensors. The front of the handset sports a 20-megapixel camera shooter for selfies and video calling.

The Nokia 9 PureView rocks a 5.99-inch QHD+ (1,440 x 2,960 pixels) POLED display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio and in-display fingerprint sensor. The handset is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage. The phone runs Android 9 Pie out of the box and houses a 3,320mAh battery that supports wireless charging.
