“All the rumours about the upcoming Nokia 9 flagship in one place”

The year 2017 saw iconic brand Nokia stepping back into the smartphone game, with the launch of the Nokia 6 (first impressions) in China. While the Nokia that is returning isn’t quite the same as it used to be in the past, yet just the name of the brand brings a whole lot of nostalgia into the equation. Nokia’s roadmap then shifted to MWC, where HMD Global (the company that holds the rights to make and sell Nokia-branded phones) announced new offerings such as the Nokia 5 (first impressions), Nokia 3 (first impressions) and a refreshed variant of our all-time favourite Nokia 3310. And after a bit of waiting, an Android-powered Nokia flagship finally got launched in the form of the Nokia 8 (review) later in the year. The smartphone was a capable option, but got slightly overshadowed by similarly-priced rivals such as the OnePlus 5. That said, HMD Global has another chance this year, with the Nokia 9 all set to launch pretty soon. Here’s what to expect.

Design and display

While the Nokia 8 features a standard 16:9 display measuring 5.3-inches diagonally, the Nokia 9 is expected to flaunt a 5.5-inch or a 5.7-inch canvas with the more modern 18:9 aspect ratio and minimal bezels. Moreover, the company will reportedly opt for OLED panels in the upcoming smartphone, which should result in better contrast ratios, deeper blacks and more vibrant colours. The use of an OLED screen might also bring in the Always-On Display, though the chances of this happening are still 50-50. In terms of the resolution, the brand is expected to go with QHD+ for the new Nokia 9.

Coming to the design of the smartphone, a lot is expected to change. That said, most of the changes will most likely be the consequence of the fact that the Nokia 9 will ship with an 18:9 display. As such, the bezels are expected to be slimmer, and even the fingerprint scanner may be moved to the back of the smartphone. Apart from this, we expect the same solid metal-clad design that we saw on the Nokia 8.

Audio takes centre stage

The Nokia 9 is said to play host to a trio of microphones, along with Nokia’s special acoustic algorithms. Both of these with OZO Audio might make it possible to capture better quality 360-degree surround sound. This will also help provide 3D audio optimised for headphones and spatial audio playback feature, offering an immersive experience. On the other hand, the smartphone will reportedly ship with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Top-of-the-line hardware

With the Nokia 9, the brand is expected to bring top-tier specifications. Under the hood, the device is speculated to be powered by the latest and greatest by Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 845 SoC, mated to 4 or 6 gigs of RAM. That said, there is a slight possibility that the Nokia 9 could come out with the Snapdragon 835 instead of the newer variant. If this is indeed true, the reason might be a shortage of new chips or plain cost cutting. On the other hand, we expect 64GB or 128GB of internal storage on the device.

Latest and purest iteration of Google’s OS

While the Nokia 6 that was launched in China didn’t run on the purest form of Android, HMD Global announced at MWC last year that globally, Nokia smartphones would stick to stock Android when it comes to software. For the end user, this means they’ll get a cleaner, faster UI, with almost no bloatware and unnecessary animations. The brand also aims to deliver faster software updates, as well as monthly security patches to its smartphones. We expect all this to carry forward to the Nokia 9, which is rumoured to boot Android Oreo out of the box.

Camera and battery

While not much is known about the camera specifications of the Nokia 9, the rumour mill has given us a couple of things to get excited. The Nokia 9 will purportedly flaunt dual camera setups… and that is not a typo. The smartphone will reportedly come with four cameras, two each on both sides of the phone. As to how they might be used is still uncertain, but you can expect some good looking portrait shots from the Nokia 9.

Talking about the battery, the phone is expected to be fueled by a 3,250mAh non-removable battery with Quick Charge support.

Pricing and availability

We have both good news and bad news in this regard. The good news is that the smartphone is expected to be announced on February 25th, just a day before the start of MWC 2018. On the other hand, the bad news is that the Nokia 9 might be way more expensive than its predecessor. Rumours suggest a price bump of around $200 for the new smartphone. Meanwhile, it might also be interesting to know that the Nokia 9 might not be the only flagship HMD Global launches this year. There are quite a few rumours going around about a five-camera smartphone from the company as well. Let’s see how much of that is actually true.
