Here’s what the rumoured Nothing phone could look like

Highlights
  • A leaked live image shows the Nothing phone in the hands of CEO Carl Pei.
  • The top executive could have been showing the phone to a select few, possibly at MWC 2022.
  • Nothing phone’s launch is rumoured for April this year.

Nothing — the brainchild of OnePlus’s ex co-founder Carl Pei — is making all the right noises in the industry (pun intended) thanks to the Nothing Ear 1. The TWS earbuds are being appreciated for their performance, aggressive pricing, and unique design. For its second product, Nothing has been teasing a smartphone that will reportedly launch in April. Now, apparently proving them right, an alleged Nothing phone has been spotted in the hands of Carl Pei, possibly at the MWC 2022 show, in an image shared by the ever-reliable Evan Blass. We can see the top executive of Nothing showing off the phone to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon. This could be the same image that TechCrunch claimed to have seen in a report.

Is this the Nothing phone?

While not much is visible from the image, we can see the black colour back panel and a circular camera module with an LED flash. The stickers on the panel hint it could be a prototype model. It seems to have a boxy design like most phones these days. This certainly puts to rest rumours about Nothing working on a smartphone.

From what we can make out, the design doesn’t seem to have that ‘unique’ factor, while the TechCrunch report citing sources in the know claimed the Nothing smartphone will share a “similar design language and elements of transparency seen in Nothing’s first product.” So there’s a possibility what we are seeing could be a case or some form of camouflage to cover the actual design.

We can speculate the Nothing phone will arrive with a Qualcomm chipset but we’re not sure whether the brand will target the flagship market or start off with the premium mid-range segment like it did with the earbuds.

As for the earbuds go, the Nothing TWS buds were released in 2021 and the company claims to have sold 400,000 units as of late January.
