“OnePlus is referring to the under-display fingerprint scanner on the 6T as Screen Unlock”
The second flagship of 2018 from OnePlus, the 6T has been in the news lately. Recently, we came across an alleged leaked retail box of the upcoming smartphone hinting that it could come with a waterdrop notch display and an under-display fingerprint scanner. However, CNET has just gone ahead and confirmed from the brand that the 6T will indeed feature the in-display biometrics.
According to the CNET report, OnePlus has dubbed the feature as Screen Unlock, and it’s designed to save users the hassle of picking up the phone to unlock. According to the brand, this inclusion will reduce the number of steps required to unlock the handset. The report further goes on to say that by including this feature as an additional option along with Face Unlock, users will have the choice of unlocking the device in whichever way they deem convenient. The publication has also shared a screenshot of the upcoming smartphone revealing the glowing fingerprint icon. The screenshot also displays October 17th as the date, which could point towards the day we can expect the phone to be officially unveiled.
In addition to confirming that the smartphone will feature an in-screen fingerprint scanner, OnePlus also mentioned that the feature was originally planned to be introduced with the OnePlus 5T (review). However, since the company felt that the technology was not mature enough to meet its standards, it was put on hold until further testing. It seems that the brand is now satisfied with the technology enough to introduce it on the upcoming flagship. Also, because of the newest technology, OnePlus had to re-tweak the internals on 6T and the phone is expected to be 0.45mm thicker than its predecessor, the OnePlus 6 (review). This might also mean a more streamlined design, and possible inclusion of a waterdrop notch.
The handset maker has also managed to land the backing of T-Mobile in the US. While there is no word on the pricing, according to previous rumours, the T-Mobile variant of the OnePlus 6T will retail for $550 (~Rs 38,400).
