OnePlus 7T to receive 960fps slow-mo, 4K ultra-wide video recording in upcoming update

“While OnePlus has not confirmed a date for the update, it has stated that both the camera features will be introduced in an upcoming Android update.”

OnePlus 7T is reportedly set to receive two major features to its camera in the near future. The two new features to the camera of the OnePlus 7T will include the ability to record 960fps slow-motion videos at 720p (HD), as well as shooting 4K videos even through the ultra-wide angle camera on the device. While OnePlus did mention the 960fps slow-motion video feature, it became evident upon launch that the devices did not come with this feature built-in. This is most likely because the primary image sensor onboard the OnePlus 7T cannot record 960fps videos, and as a result, the feature is right now capped at 480fps.

With OnePlus confirming the update, it is likely that the same will be rolled out in the next major Android update. The reason for this is possibly because OnePlus could not get its frame rate upscaling algorithm for slow-motion videos ready and rolling by the time of launch. This raises more concerns regarding how well might this feature work. Given it does not support 960fps natively, OnePlus is most likely going to use video frame interpolation to multiply the maximum available frames within the sensor buffer.

While this demands closer inspection, frame interpolation in videos create problems of their own, which can lead to glitches such as frame tear in recorded videos. It remains to be seen how well OnePlus manages to optimise the same, in order to give users the maximum worth of their phone’s abilities. However, while the cause of the slow-motion video update rolling out later can be understood, it is rather unusual for a single unit of a triple camera module to support lower video output resolution than the rest.

The OnePlus 7T is known to offer 4K video recording on the standard and the telephoto units, while so far, the ultra-wide-angle module can only record full HD videos. While this is also most likely an issue with the sensor’s native make, it might also have to do with managing power consumption efficient. Nevertheless, we shall see the full details of both the features, once the update hits OnePlus 7T devices across the world.
