- The OnePlus 8 series launch event has been held online-only due to coronavirus
- OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z, and OnePlus Wireless Charger will be launched at the event
- Rumour mill has suggested a OnePlus 8 Lite model is also in development but it is not expected at tonight’s event
The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro launch event has kicked off, with the company gearing up to make its next big smartphones official. The OnePlus 8 Pro will be an interesting device in particular as it will mark the first time the brand uses a 120Hz display, 48MP quad-camera setup on the back, and 30W wireless charging on a smartphone. The company is touting the new colour options (Ultramarine Blue, Glacial Green, and Onyx Black), Matte Frosted back panel, IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating, 4,510mAH battery, and the top rating (A+) for display quality by DisplayMate among the other highlights of the smartphone. The OnePlus 8 Pro also debuts the MEMC (Motion Estimate Motion Compensation) chip on the company’s smartphones — this chip inserts one or more frame in each frame of the video to make it look smoother on the 120Hz display of the smartphone to deliver a more premium viewing experience.
Both the OnePlus 8 and its Pro sibling are powered by the Android 10-based OxygenOS build, with 280 new features including Dark Theme 2.0, Live Captions, smoother UI, Dynamic Wallpapers that change with the weather, Alexa support, etc. Both the phones will also come with 100GB complimentary cloud storage from Google One and support Google Stadia cloud gaming service. Talking about the OnePlus 8 specifications and features, it is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, has a full-HD+, 90Hz display, 48MP triple rear cameras, 4,300mAh battery with 30W wired fast-charging, etc. The two new OnePlus 8 series models will be accompanied by the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z wireless earphones and the brand’s first wireless charger.
And the prices are out! The OnePlus 8 prices are $699 and $799 in the US for the 8GB + 128GB (Glacial Green) and 12GB + 256GB (Interstellar Glow) colour options, respectively. Similarly, the OnePlus 8 is priced at $899 for the 8GB + 128GB (Glacial Green), while the 12GB + 256GB (Ultramarine Blue and Onyx Black) variant costs $999. The Bullets Wireless Z earphones are priced at $49.95. There is no word on the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro prices in India at the moment, and we can look forward to those being announced once the lockdown is over.
The launch event is an online-only affair thanks to the coronavirus pandemic that’s wreaking havoc worldwide and has disrupted life in nearly all countries. If watching the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro launch event online is on your mind, just click on the play button in the video embedded below:
