“OnePlus TV will be launched in 2019 and focus on a premium user experience, the company has previously said”
The upcoming OnePlus smart TV will be positioned in the premium segment of the Indian television market, the company has reportedly said. The Chinese player has previously announced that it will be launching its first smart TV in 2016, but no price point was mentioned at the time. Talking to Indian media, the company’s co-founder Carl Pei has now confirmed that the OnePlus smart TV will be able to carve out a space for itself in the burgeoning Indian TV market.
According to an ET report, India will be among the first markets to get the OnePlus TV, which will focus on the user experience. Pei says the company sees smart TV as the next big category. “We believe this will really replace the smartphone in the coming couple of years,” he reportedly said.
OnePlus gained fame as a maker of premium smartphones at affordable prices, and has led the premium segment of the Indian smartphone industry for the last couple of quarters, as per market research estimates. The company clearly aims to take this momentum to the new product category and eyeing youth with disposable incomes — the biggest contributors to its sales in India. The report goes on to add that Pei sees the premium TV segment in India as small but growing quickly and that the company is “happy” with its performance.
The OnePlus TV is part of the company’s efforts to build a “connected human experience,” the company’s CEO Pete Lau had said while announcing plans for a smart TV. The brand aims to utilise its knowledge about software, hardware, design, and product development from designing smartphones to lay the foundation for the smart TV experience. The TV will reportedly receive software support for a period of five years.
