OnePlus TV confirmed to feature 55-inch QLED display and run on Android TV

“Since Google doesn’t allow tweaking of the Android TV platform, the brand might use apps to offer customisation and better user interface”

OnePlus TV global launch in India is scheduled for September, though a specific date isn’t revealed. The OnePlus TV is confirmed to come with content integration from different providers and pack social features as well. Now, ahead of the launch, more details about the TV have been teased. Akis Evangelidis, vice president at OnePlus France on his Twitter handle revealed that the OnePlusTV would have a 55-inch QLED display, in line with the expectations. It’s possible there could be other sizes as well, as suggested by the Bluetooth SIG certification.

Separately, speaking to Gadgets360, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau confirmed that the OnePlus TV would be powered by the Android TV platform and also revealed few other details as well. Pete reiterated that it wouldn’t be a traditional TV; instead, it will be positioned as a centre of a smart home. Talking about the pricing, he said the company is aiming to offer a premium product that is comparable to Samsung and other brands but at a much lower price. However, he noted that one shouldn’t expect the prices to be “half” of those tier-one brands, but should cost lesser, thanks to online-only strategy.

Given that Google certified OnePlus TV models to use Play Store earlier today, the smart product was expected to run Android TV. The company also claims to be working on “optimising” the system uniquely. Lau also said that OnePlus TV would have a custom and “improved” UI on top of Android TV and have seamless smartphone integration. Since Google doesn’t allow tweaking of the Android TV platform, the brand might use apps to offer customisation and better user interface. Talking about India-first launch, Pete said that OnePlus already has content deals with providers in the region, and this has become increasingly important for smart TVs. With the launch inching closer, we might come across more details in the next few days.
