The OnePlus TV is official. Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus, for the first time, ventured outside the mobile segment with the launch of its smart television duo in New Delhi on Thursday. The OnePlus TV Q1 and OnePlus TV Q1 Pro (first impressions) are two variants of the same 55-inch 4K QLED TV, which has been placed in the premium segment. 91mobiles caught up with OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei at the sidelines of the OnePlus TV launch in New Delhi to discuss the brand’s plans for the Chinese startup in the Indian TV market.
“Kuch bhi ho sakta hai,” was Pei’s response on being asked whether more OnePlus TV models with bigger screen sizes will launched in India.
On being asked whether affordable TVs with smaller screen sizes were on OnePlus’ India agenda, Pei specified that the company’s mission is clear that it is not a ‘mass-ey’ brand, and instead focusses on premium segment of the market. It has kept this focus in the smartphone market and will continue to do so in the TV market as well.
He declined to comment on whether a 65-inch OnePlus TV would be launched to take on Xiaomi’s recent Mi TV. However, his suggestion towards a premium audience focus hints at bigger screen sizes or even TV models with more advanced display technology such as OLED, which could launch in India next.
To recall, 91mobiles was the first to report OnePlus’ focus on OnePlus TV for India earlier this year. The company has been busy setting up large experience centres in order to accommodate their 55-inch TVs for display. Back in August, a Bluetooth SIG listing had revealed that OnePlus TV models with 43-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch screen sizes were in the works. While the 55-inch has been announced, the other three could be part of the company’s TV roadmap in India. Samsung also offers QLED TVs in these screen sizes.
Carl Pei also said that OnePlus hasn’t tied up with any third-party vendor to provide after-sales service for the OnePlus TV. “I believe, OnePlus has the right infrastructure to handle customer service for this segment as well,” he said.
Both the OnePlus TV and TV Pro go on sale in India during the Amazon Great Indian Festival sale, priced at Rs 69,900 and Rs 99,900, respectively. They come packed with premium features including 4K QLED panels, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, HDR10, Android TV 9.0, and a kevlar-like back design. The OnePlus Pro also gets 50W front-firing speakers and retractable soundbar. The TVs run OxygenPlay, with Zee5, Eros Now, and Hungama Play integration.
