“The patent reveals OPPO’s phone with selfie camera hole overlaid with the camera app icon”
The punch-hole selfie camera smartphone that debuted last year with Samsung Galaxy A8s is gaining traction. Huawei and Honor have already launched their respective Nova 4 and View 20 devices with display hole that houses selfie camera. Now, OPPO seems to be gearing up to launch such a device. The Chinese OEM has reportedly filed a couple of patent applications at WIPO that demonstrate alternative ways to use a punch-hole. The patents (first spotted by LetsGoDigital) are titled, ‘Mobile phone with app icon interface’.
As the name suggests, OPPO has patented for the technology to put icons over the selfie camera hole. The vendor could either implement the selfie camera at the upper left corner, and the camera cutout would be overlaid with the camera app icon so that it remains hidden and doesn’t look conspicuous. Furthermore, clicking on the icon will launch the app and swiping right will close it. The app icon is said to remain at its place even if you scroll the screen sideways.
The second patent filing reveals some sort of an app launcher around the selfie camera hole that seems to house five app icons. It also shed some light on the new swipe movements that OPPO might introduce with the device. Swipe movement on the screen will make the icons appear or disappear. You can also scroll to make way for new icons to show up and will be able to turn the whole feature off/ on.
The specifications of the mysterious OPPO device remain unknown at the moment, but we can tell you it’ll have a dual camera setup and a fingerprint sensor at the back panel. That’s all we know so far! It remains to be seen if and when OPPO is planning to launch the device. However, rumours are it could happen at MWC 2019 (kickstarting on February 25th) where the vendor has planned to introduce a smartphone with 10x optical zoom lens.
