“The OPPO R17 Pro and OnePlus 6T are identical in more ways than one”
OPPO has launched the much-awaited R17 Pro in India. The latest from the brand offers Super VOOC flash charge and a triple rear camera setup. That apart, the OPPO R17 Pro touts flagship features and is likely to rival the OnePlus 6T (review). In fact, the similarities between the OPPO R17 Pro and the OnePlus 6T are striking, so let’s how they fare against each other.
Design and display
Both the OnePlus 6T and the OPPO R17 Pro come equipped with edge-to-edge displays with waterdrop notches. Both of them feature 6.4-inch FHD+ displays that offer a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 19:5:9. It’s worth mentioning that the rear of the 6T and the R17 Pro looks pretty similar, except for the triple rear camera setup on the latter.
That said, the gradient finish on OPPO’s R17 Pro looks downright stunning. The Radiant Mist colour option offers a blend of blue and purple hues that shift with respect to light. Although the OnePlus 6T is also available in multiple colours, with its Thunder Purple variant being a head-turner.
Hardware and software
The primary difference between the OPPO R17 Pro and OnePlus 6T is what lies under the hood. The R17 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, while the OnePlus 6T offers the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Both the devices are offered with RAM options of up to 8GB. However, unlike the 6T, the OPPO handset isn’t available in 256GB storage variant.
The smartphones are very different when it comes to software as well. The OnePlus 6T runs Oxygen OS which based on Android 9.0 Pie. The OS offers a stock Android-like interface with a couple of interesting features and an array of optimisations that result in better performance. As far as the OPPO R17 Pro is concerned, the device ships with ColorOS 5.2 running atop Android 8.1 Oreo.
Camera and battery
In the camera department, the OPPO R17 Pro seems to take the lead (at least on paper). The OnePlus 6T offers a dual rear camera setup with 16MP Sony IMX 519 sensor and 20MP Sony IMX 376K sensor. The selfie shooter on the 6T is 16MP Sony IMX371 sensor with EIS. The R17 Pro on the other hand, comes fitted with a triple rear camera setup that consists of a main 12MP camera with f/1.5, 20MP telephoto lens and a third sensor that helps in capturing 3D images. On the front, OPPO’s offering comes equipped with a 25MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture and support ultra wide-angle selfies.
The OnePlus 6T is backed by a 3,700mAh battery, and can be juiced up quickly thanks to Dash Charge support. The OPPO R17 Pro also comes with a 3,700mAh cell and the Super VOOC flash charge promises to charge the phone up to 40 percent levels within just 10 minutes.
Both the OPPO R17 Pro and OnePlus 6T comes with a similar display, battery, and design. However, the similarities end there. When it comes to internals, the 6T is clearly more powerful with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset. The fact that the phone comes with near stock Android and will be quick to receive updates deserves a mention as well. On the other hand, the OPPO R17 Pro does have a triple-camera setup, but we aren’t sure what exactly the third sensor is used for.
As far as pricing is concerned, the OnePlus 6T, once again, has the advantage. Priced at Rs 37,999 for the base model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, the 6T is more affordable than the OPPO R17 Pro that’s priced at Rs 45,990.
