Pixel Fold 2 to reportedly skip Tensor G3 chipset but feature more RAM

Highlights
  • Pixel Fold 2 is reported to feature a Tensor G4 chipset, skipping the Tensor G3 SoC.
  • The foldable is reportedly under testing internally for the last couple of months.
  • Google will also reportedly increase the RAM from 12GB on the Pixel Fold to 16GB RAM on the successor.

Google forayed into the foldable segment with the launch of Pixel Fold in the second half of 2023. Now, it looks like the Mountain View giant is working on a potential successor, which could be called the Pixel Fold 2. Rumours have it that the next Pixel foldables will skip the Tensor chipset and embrace the new Tensor G4 chipset. For those unaware, the original Pixel Fold came with Tensor G2 SoC.

Pixel Fold 2 might feature Tensor G4 chipset

  • According to a report from Android Authority citing sources, the next foldable from Google could be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset.
  • The foldable is rumoured to skip a generation chipset and go straight to Tensor G4 SoC.
  • Google’s current flagship, the Pixel 8 series is powered by the Tensor G3 SoC.
  • The Google Tensor G4 chipset is expected to power the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro.
  • The report says that Pixel Fold 2 has been under testing internally for the last couple of months.
  • The earlier prototype of the foldable featured Google’s Tensor G3 chipset codenamed ‘zuma’ but recent prototypes have shifted to the Tensor G4 chipset, which is codenamed ‘zumapro’.
  • Besides the chipset, the report citing sources says that there are some prototypes of the Pixel Fold 2 with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 4.0 storage.
  • Last year’s Pixel Fold featured 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage
  • Lastly, the report says the Pixel Fold 2 is at the beginning of the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stage and there are still various iterations to go before the Mass Production (MP).

This isn’t the first that Google is upgrading the chipset during its testing. To recall, Google’s first tablet, the Pixel Tablet initially featured a Tensor G1 chipset during testing but it ended up shipping with Google’s second-generation G2 SoC on the commercial variant. The tablet’s codename was changed during development to reflect this. It was changed from “tangor” to “tangorpro.” There are chances the same could happen with Pixel Fold 2 as well.

If Google is indeed firm on putting the latest G4 SoC on the Pixel Fold 2, then the launch timeline of the foldable might also change. This is considering Google usually reserves the new Tensor chipset for its hardware event in October when the new Pixel phones launch. To recall, the original Google Pixel Fold was announced with Tensor G2 during the Google I/O 2023 event in May and the Pixel 8 series debuted in October with Tensor G3 chipset.

The Google Tensor G4 is expected to feature ARM Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 CPU cores. The chipset is rumoured to be fabricated by Samsung. Google might switch to TSMC for Tensor G5 in 2025.
