PlayStation 5 cannot be purchased in-store on launch day, Sony confirms

Sony says this is to prevent people from gathering around stores in large numbers.

  • The PlayStation 5 will not be available for sale in major retail outlets.
  • Sony is encouraging users to buy the console online.
  • PS5 preorders are currently not open in India and the release date has not been confirmed as well

If you are eager to get your hands on PlayStation 5 on launch day, there is some bad news as Sony does not plan on selling the PS5 on launch date via brick and mortar retail outlets. The only way to acquire a PlayStation 5 on release will be online, but that can be cumbersome thanks to bots and scalpers. This restriction doesn’t apply to users who opted for in-store pickup from retail outlets like Target and Walmart. Sony states that the measure is being put in place to disincentivize users from gathering outside retail stores in large numbers, which is very likely, given the monumental amount of hype generated around the PlayStation 5. The Japanese brand has said the following regarding the PS5 launch availability on its blog post

No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase. Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.

While the decision to limit physical PlayStation 5 sales makes sense given the current global scenario, it leaves many users in the lurch, especially in markets like India, where pre-ordering a console is not an option as of now. Sony took its own sweet time announcing the PS5 price in India, but we can attribute trademark-related issues to that delay. As expected, both variants of the console cost significantly more than in the western markets, with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition retailing at Rs 39,990 and the PlayStation 5 at Rs 49,990.

To make matters worse, Sony India has not shared the PlayStation 5 release date in India. On multiple occasions, the official website has stated (and subsequently retracted) that the PlayStation 5 will be available for sale on November 19. Currently, the website neglects to mention when the console will be released in India.
