Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 460, 662, and 720G SoCs in India to power 2020 budget and mid-range phones

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 460, Snapdragon 662, and Snapdragon 720G chipsets in India. The three new SoCs will power upcoming budget and mid-range smartphones. All three tout improved 4G support and connectivity features that include them being Wi-Fi 6-ready. In fact, the Snapdragon 460 is the first Wi-Fi 6-ready chipset in the Snapdragon 400 series. The Snapdragon 662 will be replacing the old Snapdragon 660 chipset, while the Snapdragon 720G is a gaming-centric processor that will enable OEMs to launch more affordable gaming smartphones in the Indian market. Both Xiaomi and Realme have announced that they will be launching phones this year powered by these new processors, especially the Snapdragon 720G.

Snapdragon 460 specifications and features

The Snapdragon 460 SoC is an octa-core chipset that includes four performance Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8Ghz and four Cortex-A73 cores at 1.6GHz. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 460 chipset offers 70 percent increase in performance compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 450. The new chipset is also more power efficient as it is based on a 11nm process compared to the 14nm Snapdragon 450.

As mentioned earlier, the Snapdragon 460 chipset is the first in the Snapdragon 400-series to be Wi-Fi 6-ready. Moreover, the chipset is also the first in the series to get an Adreno 600-series GPU with an Adreno 610 GPU that will deliver 60 percent performance increase over its predecessor. With a Spectra 340 ISP, the Snapdragon 460 can support up to a single 25MP sensor or dual 16MP cameras. The chipset also supports Quick Charge 3.0.

Snapdragon 662 specifications and features

The Snapdragon 662 slots between the Snapdragon 660 and 665 SoC. The chipset is made up of four Cortex-A73 cores at up to 2GHz and four Cortex A53 cores at 1.8GHz. The chipset gets the Adreno 610 GPU much like the Snapdragon 460 and is based on a 11nm process. It also includes a Spectra 340T ISP that can support 48MP photography, HEIF capture, smooth zooming and up to triple cameras. 

Connectivity features on the Snapdragon 662 include Bluetooth 5.1 and aptX HD support for clear and lag-free sound quality over wireless headphones, Qualcomm TrueWireless Stereo, Qualcomm FastConnect 6100, and Wi-Fi 6-ready. The Snapdragon 662 also supports Quick Charge 3.0. 

Snapdragon 720G specifications and features

The Snapdragon 720G is an entertainment-centric chipset, and will allow OEMs to launch affordable gaming smartphones in India. It slots below the Snapdragon 730G processor in Qualcomm’s lineup. The octa-core Snapdragon 720G comprises two Cortex A76 performance cores at 2.3GHz and six Cortex A55 cores at 1.8GHz, providing a 60 percent performance increase over its predecessor. The chipset includes the Adreno 618 GPU and is based on an 8nm process, much like the Snapdragon 730G.

The Snapdragon 720G comes with a Spectra 350T ISP, which supports up to 192MP photo capture, HEIF capture, smooth zooming and 4K video recording. The chipset is also Wi-Fi 6-ready and supports Bluetooth 5.1, aptX HD, TrueWireless Stereo, and Quick Charge 4.0+ with USB-PD.
