Qualcomm unveiled its two new chipsets at its global launch event – the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoCs. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is the successor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and will be the new default flagship processor in the Android smartphone realm. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 with a dedicated AI Engine, on the other hand, comes as a successor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G and will be the new mid-range processor option.

The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 brings 10 percent faster CPU and GPU performance. It also comes with 30 percent improved power efficiency. Let’s take a look at the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 features and availability.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 availability

The latest flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC will be seen on many flagships smartphone like Samsung Z Fold 4, Samsung Z Flip 4, Xiaomi 12 Ultra, Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition, OnePlus 10 Ultra, iQOO 10 Pro, and Motorola Frontier. The Xiaomi 12 Ultra is said to be the first Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 powered smartphone to debut this year. It will also be seen on smartphones from ASUS ROG, Black Shark, HONOR, Nubia, OPPO, RedMagic, Vivo, and ZTE that are said to be available in the third quarter of 2022.

The mid-range Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is said to hit the smartphone market in the second quarter of 2022. OPPO Reno 8 series, which debuts in China next week, will be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 brings 10 percent faster CPU and GPU performance. It comes with a 30 percent improvement in power efficiency in CPU and GPU. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1’s peak Cortex-X2 core is clocked at up to 3.2GHz compared to 3.0GHz of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It packs a Snapdragon X65 5G modem that will result in a peak download speed of up to 10GB per second. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 supports up to 3200MHz LPDDR5 storage and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 technology.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 flaunts a Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor, which supports up to 200MP configuration. The processor supports 8K video capturing at 30fps and 4K video shooting at 120fps. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG for videos and Qualcomm Aqstic and Qualcomm aptX for audio.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 features

The new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 4nm CPU comes with a dedicated AI Engine, Adreno 662 GPU, and a Kryo CPU cluster clocked at up to 2.4Ghz. It is claimed to bring 20 percent faster graphics and 30 percent faster AI task performance over the Snapdragon 778G. The Adreno Frame Motion Engine on Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 delivers double frame rates with the same power consumption as Snapdragon 778G. Much like the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also houses a Snapdragon X62 5G modem but with a peak download speed of up to 4.4GB per second.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

It also has a Qualcomm Spectra image signal processor that supports up to 200MP photo capture and 4K HDR video capturing. It has Qualcomm aptX and Snapdragon Sound technology for audio. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 comes with the Android SE and Trusted Management Engine that promises additional security for digital wallets.
