[Exclusive]: Realme plans to launch first U series selfie-centric phone with Helio P70 SoC

“The first Realme U series smartphone will be unveiled in November”

Realme plans to launch a new smartphone series with ‘U’ branding in India later this month, 91mobiles has learnt from third-party sources. The new Realme U series will be the third lineup for the company after the Realme 1 and Realme C series. It will another effort by the company to challenge the dominance of Xiaomi in the Indian market.

The brand will use the MediaTek Helio P70 processor fabricated on 12nm process in the first Realme U series smartphone. Apart from this, we can confirm that it will be a selfie-centric device that will take on the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Y2. While price segment isn’t confirmed, we can expect the upcoming handset to priced in the Rs 10k-15k segment. MediaTek had announced the Helio P70 SoC late last month and at the Indian Mobile Congress had revealed that Realme will be first vendor to release a handset with the new chip. This launch had been pegged for November 2018.

Realme started operations with the launch of Realme 1 in May this year, followed by Realme 2, Realme 2 Pro, and Realme C1. The brand has received a good response for the market, with Counterpoint Research saying sales crossed 1 million units in the July-September quarter. The brand is aimed at the youth and its India head Madhav Sheth has said it will operate in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment.

Since it is focussing on the affordable segment, it has thin margins and recently had to increase prices of two of its phones due to the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the dollar. The Realme 2 price in India for the 3GB RAM variant has been raised from Rs 8,999 to Rs 9,499, while the Realme C1 now costs Rs 7,999 compared to its launch price of Rs 6,999.
