3 reasons to buy (and 2 reasons not to buy) the iPhone 14 Plus

Apple iPhone 14 series debuted back in September and includes four models: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is the first time in two years that Apple has ditched the mini and replaced it with iPhone 14 Plus version for the first time. The Cupertino giant says the Plus model is aimed at those who want a big screen and is priced slightly lower than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Plus is very similar to the standard version, except for the large size.

The iPhone 14 Plus price in India starts at Rs 89,900 and goes up to Rs 1.19 lakh. iPhone 14 Plus specifications include the A15 Bionic SoC, 12MP dual cameras on the back, a standard 60Hz display, and it runs on the latest iOS 16 out of the box. We have recently reviewed the iPhone 14 Plus and based on that, here are the top three reasons to buy the device (and reasons to skip it).

3 reasons to buy the iPhone 14 Plus

Capable performer: The iPhone 14 Plus is powered by A15 Bionic SoC paired with a 5-core GPU for graphics and 16-core NPU. Though the chipset is from last year, it is still a capable performer that can breeze through any task thrown at it. There were barely any lags and could power through any graphic-intense game thrown at it.

The chipset is coupled with iOS 16 to offer an impressive user experience. The animations are smooth and apps open instantly and stay in memory as well. There are literally no complaints regarding the performance.

Good cameras: The iPhone 14 Plus ships with dual cameras on the back, with a 12MP wide-angle primary sensor with a larger f/1.5 aperture, sensor-shift OIS, and a 12MP secondary ultra-wide-angle lens. It has a 12MP snapper on the front for selfies and video chats.

While the specifications are familiar on paper, the primary sensor’s size has been upgraded to 1.9µm and the unit boasts a larger f/1.5 aperture. The daylight images are crisp with ample details and dynamic range. Much like most iPhones, the focussing speeds are excellent. The focus-shit works perfectly well when moving closer to a subject. The newly introduced Photonic Engine helps in gathering more details and brightness at night.

The 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens is also impressive, thanks to the Photonic Engine and captures more than reasonable nighttime shots. The 12MP images capture from the front camera are also more than impressive and are social shareable as well. The video recording on the Phone 14 Plus is yet another positive point. It can record 4K videos at 60fps.

Long story short, the cameras on the iPhone 14 Plus are a joy to use.

Impressive battery: iPhone 14 Plus is again very impressive. There is 15W MagSafe wireless charging support. Apple claims the phone can offer 26 hours of video playback on a single charge. While the company hasn’t mentioned the exact battery capacity, it could be a 4,300mAh unit. Our review notes battery life is so good that it could easily last more than a day on moderate usage. Bundle that with a 20W adapter to speed up the charging speeds of the phone slightly.

Reasons to not buy the iPhone 14 Plus

Slow fast charging: Apple iPhones usually don’t come with super fast charging support like their Chinese counterparts. The same applies to iPhone 14 Plus as well. There is 15W MagSafe wireless fast charging support and with an adapter, you have to spend some more to get reasonably fast charging support. Despite spending close to Rs 90,000, the charging speeds are relatively very less and are a pain to put up when in an emergency.

No higher refresh rate: The iPhone 14 Plus ships with the standard 60Hz refresh rate display. In comparison, even a Rs 15,000-price phone these days offers a 120Hz or at least 90Hz screen. This is a huge deal breaker for those who have used higher refresh rate screens. While the animations are smooth, they are no match to the ProMotion screens.
