Recharge your Jio, BSNL, Airtel, Vi SIM with Rs 20 for 3 months of service, says TRAI guidelines

Highlights
  • TRAI has applied the Automatic Number Retention Scheme for all telecom operators in the country.
  • The guidelines suggest that the SIM card will be disconnected for users who do not engage in voice, data, SMS, or other services on their SIM card for 90 days.

In a bid to enhance users’ experience, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced that Jio, BSNL, Airtel, and Vi users will now be able to keep their devices active for four months with a minimal Rs 20 recharge. This move also aims to ease the financial burden on prepaid mobile users. Here’s more about the new TRAI guidelines.

TRAI guidelines details

  • TRAI has applied the Automatic Number Retention Scheme for all telecom operators in the country, including Jio, BSNL, Airtel, and Vi.
  • The guidelines suggest that the SIM card will be disconnected for users who do not engage in voice, data, SMS, or other services on their SIM card for 90 days and lack an active recharge.
  • It is worth mentioning that in such scenarios, the telecom operator may deregister the number from the user’s name and assign it to a new user.
  • This is not a new guideline and was introduced in 2013. However, telecom operators failed to follow the rule, letting their users maintain an active base plan for their SIM cards to remain active.

Here’s what you have to do:

  • If you want to keep your SIM card active, you must recharge it with Rs 20, which will keep your number active for 90 days.
  • If you don’t use it for another 90 days but have a balance of Rs 20, the amount will be deducted from your account, and the validity will be extended for another 30 days.
  • However, if a user fails to maintain a good balance, they will be given a grace period of 15 days to top up their balance, and ultimately, the SIM card will be deactivated.
  • Once the SIM is deactivated, most likely incoming calls and OTPs will be blocked.
